I am looking for information on small bulldozers that were air-dropped on Pacific Islands during WW2, for allied forces to make quick runways. They were built from parts of different companies, i believe by ford. And the outside of the dozer says Schramm. My neighbor has a running one, with a V8 engine. And we are trying to find a value or if there are more out there?

There was loads of eqipment on the Island of Santo in Vanuatu.(formerly called the New Hebridies) There was a U.S. base in Luganville. At the end of the war it was dumped by driving it all off a jetty, the place is called Million Dollar Point. The reason for this was that if millions of dollars worth of nearly new bulldozers and trucks etc were to be sent back it would have flooded the market to the extent that it could have put manufacturers out of bussiness. Anyway, I fly out there on Saturday 28th July for 2 weeks on a working holiday and Million Dollar Point is #1 on my things to see while I am there list!

Clark built small airborne dozers that were brought in by gliders. Their first job was digging graves for the glider pilots. (old story, don't know if it's really true.)

I think tommcd is probably thinking about const equipment parachuted in (which I know nothing about)(every day there"s more things I don"t know anything about!)...but, as to the glider units, there"s a lot of truth in the old story. The Jeeps, crawlers, whatever, was bolted-tied-strapped in in the rear of the glider--behind the men--and if the glider came in too steep, or hit something solid before it slid to a halt...

Cargo chutes are bigger diameter than the T10 steerables (32 foot) that we used. I believe they were 100 foot diameter, and multiples were used, depending on the size of the cargo. Gotta be a boar's nest to get all of them to catch air.

While I was too young to be there, I've been told some of that stuff dug pretty deep holes when the 'chutes didn't work...
