Tularemia (Rabbit Fever)

Want'a guess what I just had. This is very nasty stuff 4 weeks to get better and 5 days in the hospital. Becareful when picking up dead animals they may give you something real nasty. I Feel better now. Lost a lots of time and weight 40lbs. Just wanted everyone to think twice before getting to close to dead critters.

You can also get it from live rabbits. When I was a kid my dad always made us clean our hands with alcahol after cleaning fresh killed rabbits or from cleaning tame rabbits for this reason.

Okay, I know I have a very good excuse for picking up dead animals, most of which are just good old, fresh road-kills, but why on Earth were you messing with a dead rabbit?

Dog brought it up to the house. Just picked it up and tossed it into the ditch. But they say all you need to do is breath it in.

The dog may have ben the killer, then. A lot of dogs will kill rabbits without eating them. Yes, tularemia is potentially fatal. I really should just look more into it on the web, too, but you should see just how much of this stuff I do wade through as "new" bugs come and go with wildlife and even domestic animals.

I do remember well that one of my aunts while practicing in Virginia, lost a patient to this disease back in the early 1970's. She is afraid to eat wild rabbits to this day, but I still eat them.

By the way, my legit excuse for collecting road kills is to feed to raptors and other carnivores in captivity.
