This is the hardest working diesel/tool/machine I've ever had. I just work the thing to the max and it's never, ever failed me.

But, I think I'm gonna go into town tomorrow and trade my 2001 PS 7.3 with 107K miles in on a '08 6.4.

Is there any reason I shouldn't? Will I be sorry?

That old 7.3 is one heck of a truck.

Allan

I don't know. I spose you're set on a new one anyway....
I tink I'd wait and see what disaster this 6.4 turns out to be, or else just buy a Dodge with the Cummins.
I think that engine has actually seen some testing before it went to market (the Cummins I mean). Ford seems to think they can sort that out on the fly....

Allan, IMO, Ol Pard, I would not do this! Not on a Whiskey Bet! As others have said....@ 109K mileage this truck is just broke in. The 7.3s are basicly bullet Proof, We all know what they will and will do. How much chip Hp they will take. And something you may not have thought of....7.3s will run on just about anything, even used/burnt motor oil, filtered and cut with just a little DSL!!! a 6.4 will not, and Not be as forgiving as that 7.3.
Unless yours is just nickel and dimeing you to death. I would go to 200K before I would trade. Also give Ford a little longer to get all the bugs out. This is just my thoughts and I an sure you have a good reason to trade. Just wish yours was a Long box and located in the TX panhandle. Show us pics of your new addition.
Later,
John A.

Allan; drive it till it drops and then sell it. There is always somebody out there that thinks they can fix it up.

Are you having fun yet?

I'd go for it Allan, but I'd like to see you in a Duramax. I'am sure the GM dealer will give you alot less in trade than the Ford dealer so I understand. If you look in the bluebook you will notice after 5 or 6 years the value really drops fast. As for the 6.4 being first year its already been out for several months so any major troubles would have showed up by now. They sure did in the 6.0's! Some in the first 10 miles! Another thing, ford does have the 5 year 100000 mile warrenty that GM has don't they? If somthing goes wrong Ford is going to pay the bill, if they stay in business that is. Another thing it will be nice to ba able to listen to the radio, those 7.3s sure make a lot of cab noise at least compared to my Duramax they do.

Trade, your rich. Someone needs a good used truck more than you do and probably will appreciate it.

Allan, you have in your driveway one of the best truck/ engine combos ever created, IMHO. That 7.3L is a beast. I had a 1996 F250 with the Powerstroke and after i got it paid off I traded it in on a 2003 Dodge with the Cummins. I love the new truck but all I really gained was little more towing capacity and 4 more years of debt. There are times I wish I still had that truck. If you take care of that truck like you do your tractors, that truck will out last you. Remember the saying; "there is no replacement for displacement!"

Allan, I am not saying you shouldn't that is up to you, but I have heard bad reports on the new engines. My 96 Power Stroke has over 200,000 on it an still runs like it did when new. I have put one water pump and glow plugs in it.

I talked with a mechanic in a diesel hotrod shop awhile back. He said the new Fords couldn't handle the boost for long. Dodge could and the 7.3 could. Check him out.. freedomdeisels.com

Allen I always tell my customers, if its doing the job, is reliable, isn't costing a fortune in repairs and isn't to bad looking there is no reason to sell it. Soon as you spill that first coffe in the new one or get a door ding its just another used truck. Besides at 6 years old and 100k on the clock the worst part of the depreciation is already gone. However, sometimes its like looking at a pretty um, tractor, just cause you don't really need it dosn't mean you don't want it.

Like you were saying, you've still got a truck that has some resale left. But I'd have to agree with Greg, I would shy away from a 1st year production run. Although, my Ford mechanic friend(only works on diesels) has had nothing but good things to say so far about the 6.4

Allan, I made that mistake with the 2003 6.0L what a POS I would never spend that much money again on any first year production run. From what I here in Dearborn this 6.4L was rushed into production also just like the 6.0 with only limited testing. Just my $.02

Hi Greg,

My 7.3 has some equity to it. If I wait much longer, it means keeping it for the duration.

Like I told the dealer the other day, I either have to trade or buy a set of tires to the tune of $800 or so.

Really do hate to let that truck go tho and there are no bad "reports" on the 6.4s other than the poor fuel mileage thing. :>(

Actually Allen there have been "reports" bad ones. Bad injectors turbo seals leaking etc. There is a reason ford made it so the cab could be reomved in like 30 minutes.

$800 vs $48,000, should be an easy choice. Wait another year, by then the 6.4 will have proven itself and all of the bugs will be worked out. Thats what Im doing.

That is exactly what I am going to do. My 05 will need tires and the 6.4 will have had a year to bring out any weakness that is in it.
By the time you put on a set of tires, and brakes, and do a few other things once they are out of warranty, you may as well buy new, and start over again. Although I did trade a 1 year old F-150 one time because it needed a wash job.

I got a reason-if it aint broke dont fix it. If it works fine for what your doing, save some money and keep it.
