Bales like this one are bringing $45 to $60 per bale here in Northwest Missouri. There is alot of arguement about thats to high. Hay has been way under priced for years, the price of equipment, fuel and many other expenses have finally caught up with everyone. What are big round and small squares selling for in other parts of the country?
What are everyones thoughts on value of hay aswell as what does it cost you to bale hay?

Here in south Mississippi good heavy squares of costal go for around $4.00 ea. and the heavy rolls from $25 to $35. Ive been paying 25 for years for the rolls.

Paying "$25 for years" means you have been paying much less than they are worth. Who's fault is that? The hay producer for not charging the appropriate price for what the hay is worth.

Unlike the other commodity crops produced on farms, hay does not have the "board" to set the price. This gives a great opportunity to hay producers to set their price rather than take what the board or the elevator "gives" them

I tire of the "well it's worth $2 per bale" selling mentality. This ruins the hay market for those of us that view it (appropriately I may add) as a profit center for our operations.

For what it's worth I've never seen hay sell "too high" but I've seen alot sell way too cheap. The hay market seem to do a pretty good job of balancing itself out via supply and demand and when hay prices get high there is usually a good reason for it.

This thread illustrates why I prefer to sell my hay by the TON. After all "bale" is not a standard measure for commerce.

I sold all of my first cutting in 1700 # round bales for $150/ton. That is $127.50 per round bale.

Location, location...It is just the opposite here 200 miles east of Walt, NE part of Oregon, last winter I paid $35 for 1400 lb square bale grass hay. Now if you are talking about alfalfa, thats a different story, it brings $150+ pr ton here. And it does not matter if it is small squares or 1 ton large square bales!!

I was paying from $2.00-3.50 a bale for hay (not that heavy ) for the goats. now they are gone !!!! and I can spend that much more on gas.

out here in Oregon good hay like that would bring $150 for 1300 lb bale. $100 for lesser quality.

Hay is anywhere from $130 to 200 a ton out here. You need to look at the local paper to see what it is worth in your area.

If that`s a 1500/1600 lb bale, your 45-60 would be a steal where I`m at in central MN. I`ve heard of grass hay going over $100/ton.

That's funny, I rarely hear of good grass hay going for $100 per ton, usually a bit to quite a bit more...usually in small squares though. Seen it up around $200 a ton a few years ago when there wasn't much to be had.

Hi Brokenwrench I have seen the same thing happen to me. Learned you cant trust anyone, especially a friend to be fair when it comes to money. In northern Wi a small square brings $2.50 a bale for decent grass alfalfa mix hay . But its like pulling teeth to get payed so you might as well give it away for $1.25 a bale. Just kidding, I learned to always set the price upfront.

Yeah, I hear ya. I had about 150 bales extra of nice grass/alfalfa mix, put up perfect. A friend of ours was interested, they only live a few miles from me. I told them I had to leave but the racks were in the field, to come look at it, and take a bale or so to see if it was what they wanted. I came back that night and the racks were gone, no talk of price yet, my bad.
She called me a couple days later, I said I assumed she took the hay. She said yes and asked me what I wanted for it, now I don`t sell much hay so I told her I`d check around and see what it`s going for and we`d go from there. She told me that last year they had bought some 2 yr old hay from a guy for a buck a bale and wouldn`t have a problem paying me 1.25 a bale. I laughed, but she was serious. So I had to make a decision. I called her back, and told her that was way to cheap, and that double that would be a deal. She got upset and said that she thought I would treat her fair. So, I told her to pay me whatever she wants. Haven`t heard from her since, and to top it all off they brought one rack back on a flat tire grrrr.
I have no luck selling hay, even when I give it away. Oh well, just had to vent
