I just bought a 1947 JD 290 two row planter. I need a new gear, the one that rasies and lowers the planter. Anyone got one/knows where to find one?

I HATE and am done with new equiptment. You can go wrong with old, but you can then fix it and get another 60 years out of it. I bought me a COLE planter and it is the biggest waste of money i ever seen in my life. If you really tighten the nut to the seed plate, the plate gripps the nut and locks up the planter. If its looser, seed gets up under the plate and locks up the planter that way.

Oh yeah, anyone want to buy a new planter...barely used!

We paid 1200 for it, were we overcharged?

I would take a second look at that Cole planter. There is a metal plate with a hole in it that goes on top of the flat disc that you spin to tighten the seed plate. It keeps the seed plate from moving and becoming too tight. It is a must have to understand and use. I have had Cole plantes for 25 years and find them to be a reliable planter for things like items from a truck garden. They will reliably plant larger seeds like pumpkin and are considered the king of pumpkin planters.
I wouldn't want to plant 100 acres of field corn with one but two acres of sweet corn or eight acres of pumpkins would be OK.
Be sure to clean and oil the fertilizer unit after each use or get a boat because you will then have a handy anchor to use next year.

This is just a guess because I was only a kid when we had a 290 but would the rope trip/lift parts be the same as used on the old FB grain drills?
