I have a 2001 2500 2WD with 8.1 and allison and a 3.73 axle. It just hit 113,000. I have pulled a 30 ft gooseneck with a lot with heavy loads over the years. It gets about 9 to 10 range at 60 loaded. Empty I can get 12 - 13 any day at 65 mph. I would prefer the 8.1 engine, allison tranny and the 3.73 to 6.0 with the 4.10 axle and standard tranny with that engine.

My 99 2500 Suburban with the 454 gets 12-13 normal and I haven't had the guts to figure mileage when towing the 560 IH.

Sounds like you guys are doing pretty good. I'm wishing I'd have bought a Duramax! Got a 2003 GMC 2500HD extended cab, long box, 4x4, allison, and 4.10 rear end. I am lucky to get 10mpg empty on the hwy and only about 4-5mpg with a 22,500lbs. load. I am not complaining though. The truck pulls great when I use it. It only sees the light of day when there is a trailer on it. Bought it in October of 2002 and it has 9,877 miles on it!!!

I guess I should consider myself lucky. My 1999 Silverado 1500 4WD, 5.3 liter Vortec -- 18-18.5 mpg highway empty, 14-15 mpg pulling my boat or 16 ft. flatbed and JD tractor. Only modification is dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. My brother-in-law has a 2006 Chev Avalanche. Don't know what engine he has, but averages 19-20 mpg highway.

GM gas mileage doesn't seem to have improved much in 37 years. Had a 69 3/4 ton chev truck with the 5.7 motor. Got 13 empty on the highway and 10 with a full size camper in the box. Sooo for the 6.0 you are getting about a half a gallon more per mile under load. Yours is injected, mine was a four barrel. Go figure.

that 6.0 is putting out almost twice the ponies that the old 350's had

I think those so called "ponies" are, to a high degree, make-believe. A 6 liter certainly does not have twice the pulling power of a 5.7 liter 350.
Torque is what gets you places and normal engine RPMs - not calculated and rarely experienced peak horsepower. A good 350 can make 330 lb. ft. of torque at 2800 RPM. A 6 liter is rated at 355-375 at over 4000 RPM. I suspect at 2800 RPM it's not much different than a 350. That's sort of poor comparison. How much driving and towing does a person do with the engine running at more than 4000 RPM? I've got no argument that the 6 liter can be a good running engine, but it does not have "twice" the pulling power of a 350 - no where near that.
I've pulled trailers with both and noticed little difference.

I think thats pretty good for what you're doing. My old '88 350 got around 12mpg unloaded if I really worked at it. You didn't say but something tells me yours is extended cab, and an automatic. You also don't say but I'd guess the HD gives you towing gears which are hard on mileage but better for the transmission.

If you really pull alot, like pulling your 2 tractors all the time, you really should have gotten a diesel. For the infrequent heavy tower (like not ever week) a gas engine makes more sense.

Plus that 6l must move right out.

I have a 2002 2500HD w/ 6.0 engine and 4.10 gears. I get 14-15 out on the highway cruising at 60 mph empty. Hauling a tractor? I don't know and probably don't want to know. But I do know that it sure can haul a tractor plus my son and grandsons up and down the road, no problem and that's why I got it. Chevy S-10's won't do what I need a truck for.

I have a 97 2500 4x4 5.7 vortec with 4:10 gear ratio and it gets 15 on the hiway empty. I don't even check it if it's loaded

I have a K-2500 Silverado Crew Cab with a 6 ltr, Auto Trans, & 373 rear. get 17 on the road "last summer on trip to MO from WV " 635 Miles one way " at 60 MPH . got 13.5 on trip to northern Panhandle of WV pulling a 25' 1985 Yellowstone Camper that weights in at 5400 lb , 270 Miles one way at 60 MPH . But mine isn't an HD is just a K-2500 "K means it is FWD". Speed has a lot to do with Gas mileage if you are driving over 60 pulling a trailer you are going too fast . Most ST tires are rated at 60 MPH .

My 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD has the same engine. It's 4WD and I get 12 running empty. I'd have expected a little better with 2WD, but it depends on rearend ratio, driving style, and load, among other things.

I'm some glad it's not my ONLY vehicle, but like the folks said below, when I need it, I need it and I try not to think about the mileage.

I think you are doing well considering what you pull. I have a 1 ton Chevy box van and an old Toyota 1/2 ton pickup. Now consider. When I put 1 ton in the toyo( 52 bags x60lbs- well over a ton) I have shock problems and gas mileage is the last thing on my mind I just want to get there. You can destroy a little truck that way.At one time actually it delivered 29mpg. My 350ci 1 ton hovered around 10 mpg all the time but it had at times very heavy machinery in it. i look at these semi's going past and am not sure what their mileage is but they move many tons at once. I'm not showing them anything about conservation no matter how I overload a small truck. These balances which are safe cost us in mpg. The things I see are huge SUVs run to the grocery store and around town all the time when their real use may be 2-3 times per year. Aprox 15 mpg.Wait till all these ABS and unmaintained hydraulics hits the fan.

Dunno why you are even worried about it.
I'm on my 2nd 2500 HD 4x4 - (02 and 06)
I've never checked the mileage on either one of them.
If I was concerned about mileage I would have bought a car.

I hate when you guys with full-size trucks talk about gas mileage. My little S-10 4x4 with a 4.3 V-6 gets 16 MPG at BEST, and that's what it's rated at. I might as well be driving a full-size truck if that S-10 doesn't save me any money.

I used to have a Ranger with the 4.0 and my brother had an S-10 with the 4.3 and neither of us could do better than 18 mpg. I went to a Dodge 2500 diesel and he's got a Chevy 1500 with the 5.3. We are both getting about the same mileage as before but now we've got trucks that can actually do something.

Exactly. I can't pull a hen off it's nest with that S-10, and yet a 3/4 T 4x4 would get as good or better mileage and I could actually use my 12,000lb. trailer. Anyone want to trade me?

Isn't that a kick in the pants? The 4.3l S trucks get lousy mileage and the Ranger is as bad or worse and neither has as much power as my Dakota which is bigger and with a 5.2l v8 it'll do and honest 20mpg if I keep the speed to 65mph.
However my old '88 GMC S15 Jimmy 2.8l 5spd would do 25mpg average no matter what I did to it. It didn't have the power of the 4.3l but it took me all over the place. It was a great woods truck too, I'd love to find another that wasn't all rotted out.

One new plan I'm kicking around in my head is to get an S truck w/4.3l and sammich in a 6.2l diesel. Should be a relatively easy swap. The lowered truck blown engine crowd has the motor mounts and adapters and stuff for the 350 all figured out plus they've got stiffeners and such to deal with the extra weight. ~150hp out of the 6.2 should be plenty in the S truck body and it should do pretty good on fuel. I could even run it on veggie oil if I were so enclined.

I drive a fairly heavily loaded 2005 3500 Chev Express with a 6.0. It gets 14.5 mpg average over the last three months. We track our fuel usage closly . Lowest I have seen is 11 (all city stop and go) and the best 15.5. Mixed driving city and hiway with some mountain pass drives.

Chris. I think that is good mileage per gallon in real world situation. You have a good engine and torque and you are not killing the machine by overload. My little toyo(old one 4cyl) can do like a trooper for a little while but is not designed for the real deal. There are trucks and there are dogs and a dashhund is just fine if you don't need a husky.

my 1982 s-10 2.5 5 speed i get 28-30 mpg. we take my buddys older 1986 gmc 4X4 1/2 ton 350v8 on a 400 mile trip twice a year and we get 16mpg with gear in the back. where getting just as good if not better than my other buddys new 1/2 ton chevy 4X4. he runs premium and doesent lay on the gas pedal. not bad for a heavy ol" 4X4.
