6V positive ground. It will likely have a three or four terminal voltage regulator. If the light swithh has ODB settings (three positions if the lettering is gone) it will need a voltage regulator. Most often the regulator is attached to the generator. The battery cables need to be at least one O gauge wire. Auto 4ga. wires will not be operational at all. JimN

Check the starter motor. If it is 6 volt, OK. If it has been changed to a 12 volt starter motor you will need another, if you change to 6 volts. Is there a voltage reg or does this come with the generator? If that is there you will need the appropriate version.
Is lighting fitted? If so you will need to check how the system has been run. 6/12 volt? 12 with 6 volt bulbs in series? 12 with series resistors and 6V bulbs. 12V bulbs will be a little dim if you are going 6 volt!
Just a few things which might need checking out. Most will indicate the original voltage - if starter, lights and VCR are all 6 volt you can be pretty sure it was a 6V system originally.

It would have been 6 volt and positive ground originally. The generator should say on a tag if it is 6 or 12.

Roger, either will work, but the 6 is original.
