THAT'S IT!

No more groundhogs!

There's now 7 holes in and/or surrounding my machine sheds and increasing! My John Deere 530 has sunk in a hole up to the rim!

I'm such a poor shot anymore with my eyes and the hogs are getting smarter each time that I miss! I've even shot one with a .410 with 6 shot and it still lives!

Please help me! No matter how many fence posts I throw around and how many feet of old fencing is laid down, the hogs still find my sheds even more attractive...

Moth balls aren't working.

I'm going to buy a truckload of C-4 and I'm GOING COMMANDO!

Would the loan of a 444 Marlin with a 3X9 scope help or maybe a 30 cal carbine with a couple of 30 shot clips if you don't kill them maybe you will scare them off . I used to hunt them for uncle with 30-30 he gave me "to kill off varmits" . Were digging in his farm pond dike & that was bad news.

AH ya don't need a truck load of C4 , just a half stick of 40% down the hole works wonders no more ground hog and back fills the hole all at once and won't even rattel the dishes in the china cupboard . Don't ask how i know .

The young ones which were born in April are starting out on their own now. Each one digs it's own den. They don't like to be together other than when the mother has her young. So, you have a lot more work to do now than if you'd been able to get them a few months ago. I put a flexible hose down one hole (they have at least two holes per den) plug the other hole (usually just run a truck wheel over it) attach it to truck exhaust (gasser) and let it run (idle) for about a half hour. It helps if the woodchuck is in the hole when you do this. If it's inside the machine shed, you'll need a hose that's long enough to reach in from the outside. I've also heard that bubble gum works good. Plugs them up. Someone here said that it does work very well. I tried rat bait onetime with mixed results. I think it took out a few. Shooting is time consuming and if they're inside the shed you have to wait till they come out and get clear of buildings and machinery. One reason that I prefer .22LR but if your eyes are bad that won't work anyway. Some breeds of dogs go after them.

Word of caution. If you decide to use car/truck exhaust inside shed, just remember that the human body takes on CO at a rate about 50 times faster than oxygen. It will take you down real fast. The advantage is, of course, that it does the same thing to the woodchuck.

i heard of a guy that had a rat problem stuck anhydrous ammonia hose down a rat hole and opened it up. of course the anhydrous was a lot cheaper them. he claimed it took care ot the rats. i don't know why work on ground hogs. don't tell the peta people.

Make sure you know where the holes are and not in buildings. Take a 10 gallon can of water pour about 1/2 gal of gasoline in it pour it in the hole wait about 5 minutes then light a newspaper and slap it in the hole be ready to shoot if any come out.

An older gentleman once told me to send a ferret down the hole and the hogs that do make it out don't return because of the sent. I'd shoot the hogs as they came out and then I know they would'nt be back. Never had a chance to try using a ferret so I can't say for sure that it works.

Neighbor used to haul liquid manure, shut the pump off and just let it dribble into the mound hole. Pretty soon a brown lump goes flying down the field. 22 finishes off the lump. Had a Ford NAA with low exhaust I used a old radiator hose to fumigate the hole.

They are thick around here lately, I've noticed, hay fields I was in earlier this week had numerous dens all over the fields.

I remember one time extending a long extension cord, a fan and some dried up grass, and was blowing smoke down into the hole, my friend just happened to see this insanity from the 2 lane state road and had to stop in to see what in the heck was going on, box fan, extension cord, smoke, down in the middle of a field, like what exactly are you doing. Well you had to be there, it did no good, but we still laugh about it today.

Get a .22 and sight it in, and or the other methods sure would seem to work. I had the one here for several years that was friendly, he must haved passed on, was a cool little guy, but now since the new generation of them are around, the mischief factor has increased, they like flowers that is for sure, but they don't mess with my vegetable garden, yet one end is still open, will be closed off tomorrow. I may have to revert to knocking a few of them off, always hate doing it, but I've noticed an increase in the population and they can be trouble sometimes.

Try the flare method. First find all of the holes- usually a groundhog digs a marked hole, and an unmarked hole, dug from underneath. Dig these holes out big enough to fit an old milk jug into real tight. When you are sure the hog is in his hole, drop either a highway flare cut in half, or the commercially available rodent "bomb" into the hole, after lighting it. Put your jugs into the holes, and shovel the dirt over the holes, and tamp with your foot. Why the jugs? slows them down long enough for the sulfur to suffocate them. Also, if you find any roadkill and shove that down the holes, that will discourage them from coming back.

When I was a pup, we would fill a hole with water and club them when they ran out the other holes. Lots of them drowned in the hole. Made for quite a stink for a couple days, but got rid of lots of them this way. Now the coyotes have thinned them down here. I have seen one at the back of the garden. Me and the Marlin took care of him.

Fire up a tractor and pipe the fumes down the hole, pack around the hose with rags. Doug N
