I'm in the market for a 80-90hp cab tractor. I looked at a 2-85 in April. Everything worked good on it, seller was going to have a leak in the PS fixed & add a factory style AC unit. I really like the seller (have bought from him before), but the mechanic has taken his time getting it ready.
Meanwhile, I found a IH 886 this weeked. About the same shape as the 2-85 except for AC needs freon & the PTO is not currently working. Guy thinks he can have the 2-85 ready by Sat., the other seller is looking to see about getting the 886 to me by Sat. The 886 has been priced at $7000 as is, which is about 1500 cheaper than the 2-85. I have a pic of the 886, don't have one of the 2-85. What do you guys think...
Thanks,
Matthew

If the shifting in the 886 is setup like the 986, I hate it. We rent a 986 from a local company once ion a great while if we need another one with more HP to run a bagger, but I"m partial to Oliver's (Whites too, even thoguh they're not the prettiest colors) We've got a 1855 and it's a very solid runner. gets the occasional leak in a hose, but that's normal on a 30 year old tractor. The 2-85 is about the same rear end, and just a different engine (slightly less HP- closer to a 1755) and sheet metal around it.

I'd go with the White. You know and get along with the guy and if he can have it ready by Saturday, try and keep him to his word.

go with the White seems it was taken care of more and you know the owner and he is going to fix the problems that is a plus too. You got two very good tractors there to pick from but I still go with the White. I own 2-85 too. Owned it for 20 years over hauled the motor twice and had to but new tries on but that is if you own any tractor. I use the 2-85 for my hay tractor and the back up tillage tractor is spring and fall. So I do put hours on it and had no major problems yet. I did not touch the transmission or the rear end yet still going strong.

Buy the White- You know the guy too, so thats a plus. They are tough old tractors, and you have to rebuild the IH PTO before using it.

I have been around a 105 not a 85 and I have run a few 986"s. I really didn"t like the way the white handled. I really enjoy the IH even though I have allways owned deere"s. Like the way the steer and how you can see. They have a few downfalls but around here in eastern nebraska much easier to get parts for the 886

That would be the trick. I don't know if the finance department would allow that though. Really do like both of em.
