Has anyone been watching The History Channel with the Ice Road Truckers? Man! These guys really earn their money. Basically, they haul loads to the DeBeer diamond mines in the arctic circle. There"s only 2 months out of the year when they can move these loads becuase that"s when the ice is thick enough to handle the weight. 350 miles one way and they are in temperature as cold as -50 degrees. Hopefully, the ice won"t break.

Great series. On every Sunday night @ 10:00 pm EST. Shown again on Friday nights. Great show.

Chuck

The 1st episode, they said when the ice breaks, the water is 275 feet deep. No chance of recovery or survival..

I saw part of it the other night. The thing that got my attention was that they can't exceed 20 mph. Any faster than that, and a wave will build up in front of the truck that can break the ice. Your truck goes into the drink and anybody behind you who can't get stopped follows. That raises the penalty for speeding to a whole 'nother level!

i have talked to a couple of fellers that used to it, then i have seen a couple of the shows, i would like to do it also. i think i would hate it when i got there, but the money would be nice. like others said, you could say you done it also. i talked to my wife once about it an she said NO. no discussion about it, so you all can see who has my brass ones. she was about as diffenent about that as when i was thinkin about goin to the anartic (south pole) to run heavy equipment. you have to sign for a year on that deal. glad i didnt now, gettin older an hating snow more an more.

Been catchen it a bit when i can get control of the HELM . Other then driven across frozen lakes and checking out your faith and relationship with the lord Don't see much differance then the old days of haulen coal out of the strip mines in the winter getting up a 2 in the morning and maken that 60 mile drive over the old back roads way before any snowplow got out to bust the drifts or salt and cinder the hills . Or haulen feed salt out to Ill. back in the Blizzards of 77 and 78 with the temps dipping down in the -35-40 degree range with out the 50-60 MPH winds . Now as for the money well from what i have seen sofar i was maken more per week haulen oversize . And avg. once a month the truckers dream load where one load paid over 10000 dollars or more and took two -three days to get it there then find a load that they called oversized that with a littel figuren ya made it legal but got the oversize rate plus the money for the premits that ya did not buy. myself i would not mind doing it for one season for the braggen wrights but then agin i don't care much for the cold.

good story about pulling a cat dozer from the lake. this is how they use to get across the ice. they are called cat trains.
