Here's whats happening with this engine. It's difficult to start, runs rough with black smoke and misses real bad until it just dies and won't re-start. It has the side mount distributor. I've put a carb kit in, new plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condensor. It is a 6 volt system. I do have spark at the plugs, rather weak however that probably just the 6 volt. Any idea's? Thank you!

RT, you should post this on the 9N, 2N, 8N board on this website. Lots of experts there that are very familiar with the 8N.

try it with out the air cleaner pipe connected and see what happens it may be flooding if it is look for a float that is leaking and full of fuel . if it runs good with the air cleaner disconnected the air cleaned is pluged up.

I set the carb to the specs that came with the kit.

Black smoke says you did something wrong in that carb. Maybe the float is set wrong or has a hole in it, or you didn't get the float needle seat tight enough. These carbs are simple but hard to really get as clean as they need to be and you may have missed some junk in it and that will also cause you problems

Specs that come with the kit will get you close to where it has to be, you still have to fine tune it. It is running way too rich. Don't know too much about Fords, but a carb is a carb. Turn the main fuel adjusting screw in about 1 to 1-1/4 turns, and go from there. Or the float could be stuck. Is it dripping fuel out of the bottom?

When you have the right mixture, the plugs should be a medium tan in color. Doug
