The 8N I bought had a non-functioning generator and regulator, so some previous owner removed or relocated associated wiring and ran directly off the battery (duh). I had the generator rebuilt and put in a new regulator, and am now trying to sort out the wiring according to a schematic I have. The schematic shows a wire coming from the coil to one post on the terminal block, then from there to an ignition lock ( I believe that's in the transmission?), from the ignition lock back to the other post on the terminal block where other wires tie in. But I can't find any wiring from an ignition lock - not sure I even have it. So can I just connect the wire coming from the coil directly to the post on the terminal block that contains the other wires?

You should have a key ignition switch in the "dash", more or less below, and to the left of, the oil gauge.

The starter button is a neutral safety setup, located in the transmission's top cover.

If you connect it up as you propose, how would you "shut it off", as the ignition would be powered all the time, burning the points and coil, and running the battery dead.

Get the proper key ignition switch, which will have "pigtails" to connect to the junction block, and wire things up following the diagram below:

Third Party Image

(The coil wiring is not all shown in the diagram. As your system is (apparently) "as-original" 6-Volt (+) ground, the wire shown connected to the coil in the diagram would be connected to it's (-) post, and the (+) post will be connected to the terminal stud on the side of the distributor.)

Bob, If I may tag onto this help you were giving Terry. I was having starting trouble with my (Newbie) 8N positive ground tractor. I replaced the "weak sister" ignition switch, cleaned connection, ie ground, solenoid and others. It then started on the first hit. I noticed that the "ground" to the regualtor had become detached, torn away. I replaced its' clip with a poor substitute, now it acts very balky to start. It did turn over, but the battery was going down. I started it with a jumper battery. I drove it, then put it away, then to check, NO it would not even turn over. Could the ground be causing this? Thanks, Steve

Thanks Bob. Your schematic was much easier to follow than the one I was trying to work off of. I picked up the proper switch today, will hook up tomorrow, and fire it up. I've got a stack of work waiting for that tractor.

Terry
