Still looking around at options for a better (easier) way to deal with small square bales. I"ve got a chance to buy a 54 bale New Holland 1010 automatic wagon for a resonable price. What"s the disadvantage of these versus an accumulator? Obviously, with an accumulator you can pick the bales up with a loader and load them directly onto a truck or trailer, I believe I"ll have to unload the bale wagon by hand or dump them in a heap....to stack later. Anyone have experience with these things? What works and what doesn"t?
Thanks
DJL

I have two 1010 wagons. It is a major pain stacking without the push off feet, but it can be done. I stack in a shed, I stack as usual and Before I pull out I put a board between the rack and bales, tie the board to the shed poles with ropes and then pull out. Many times since with the 1010 the sides raise with the rack a bale will hang up on the side and try to put the stack down. I have to keep a sharp eye on it or use a helper to watch it. However, if single bale unloading on to an elevator it works really well.

I've never seen a 1010 operate but can't imagine how they would without pushoff feet. Save your money and go for one with pushoff feet. I first had a 55 bale 1002 and now a 69 bale 1036. I have to stick with the two bale wide models to fit my existing buildings. Anyhow with either wagon I average 3 loads an hour. The 1036 has a better pickup that can be operated slightly faster. Much of the time is spent running to the shed, backing up, and unloading. With one person my neighbor could bale into kicker wagons faster than I could with a bale wagon and 2 people. But, when I was done I was done and he was still looking for help to unload his wagons. I'd recommend a NH bale wagon so long as all your hay is close to your barn and you can back into the barn to unload. They get really slow when you have to go down the road any distance and don't save much time if you have to run it in the barn and stack it with an elevator.

you need to answer some questions on your own first. Is this hay all for just your own use?
do you plan on selling it?
do you plan on selling it at the field to others with trailers or wagons for field pickup.
have some hilly ground?
is sheds large?
how far are you from your sheds if you have any? If its all your own and you will have to unload by hand once anyway then to get it into the barn by elevator then Iwould go to bale basket wagon instead, they are very nice to use and simple. if selling out of field accumulator and grapple work very nice you just load there units, with the grapple. This takes place alot in my fields.Hilly fields the bale wagons can have some issues,BUT so do SOME accumulator. Distance of travel is why I ended up going accumulator route haul 265 to load instead of little over hunderd in the bal wagons so it made for way less trips for me,and with the grapple you have alot more versatily. what do you have for loaders available now. Tractor or skidsteer unit, that also makes a difference regards to grapple. Yopu will need 3 hyd outlets or a splitter valve. They both can work if you are willing to figure them out and setup correxctly THOU. If large buildings and level, stack wagons yes would be nice anything else the accumulator setup will work in any situation if the laoder can get in. I think in KYhaymans situation he pulled in set stack off and had school kids restack the stacks in the barns,is what he talked about one time on here if I rememeber right. I t work for him. I wouldn't have a CHANCe at that thou. THEY CAN BOTH BE MADE TO WORK I know fellows that the have bale wagons and several with the accumulator setup. SOme love what they have and some don't. All I know is I run accumulator now for well over ten seasons and would never go to anything diferrent just because of the versatility. You do need to learn how to operate both and the baler you have must be able to make a relatively uniform bales with both setups. Especially the bale wagons they like them heavier also. Like Isaid befor give me a call if you want, been there done that as they say. Number is on earlier post or my website www.Ricksales.com PS If I was to do again it would be hands down accumulator, just because of versatility. You learn how to really run a grapple and you will say yourself why didn,t i do this SOONER. Ten grabs 100 bales already!!!!! and didn't get a scratch on me!!! GOOd Luck

I had a 1010 for a while, hated it with a passion. The lack of push off feet was a real pain. Sold it and got a 1034, it was a good machine and really liked it. You can use a grapple with the bale wagon just like an accumulator. Just dump the stack and move it in the shed or take it back out and load on a truck.

For me, I looked at both. The bale wagon won out. With the accumulator I would need wagons to put the hay on, a lot of them, to get it in in a timely fashion. With the bale wagon, just one did it. There were plenty of used bale wagons in the 5000 range. I never saw a decent used accumulator sell. For the cost of the accumulator I was able to buy a bale wagon, build a 2000 bale shed to unload in, and convert my existing barns to let me dump in them.

if you have a large shed they do a decent job stacking the bottom layer then you have to start throwing them up ,
