Hey all,

I crop 30 acres on my In Laws farm. He's organic so I can't spray the beans. They're 22 inch rows and I have a John Deere 60 with a single front wheel and a 40 front mount cultivator set up but would like to get something better for next year.

Here's what I need - 40-75 HP. 15.5 or smaller tires on axles capable of an 88 inch width. Dual hydraulics to run a cylinder on each side of the cultivator. 3point hitch for the rotary hoe. Diesel preferred, LP and gas considered. Under 7000 dollars.

I've looked at 1520s, 2520s, 4010s, 3020s, 2630s, etc and haven't found one suitable for my needs in my price range (it's low, I know but all or more than I can afford). Anyone have a model that comes to mind that would work better? It doesn't have to be Deere but the cultivator I got for the project is a Deere FM series so any other make would require modification.

I'm also curious in anyone is on these very narrow rows and whether or not they like them. I'm aiming for faster canopy closure. Last year I was on 38 inch rows and definately want faster closure then they allowed. If 22 inch rows don't work out, I'll just move my planter back out to 6R30. If they do work, I'm gonna hang 2 more row units on and go 8R22.

Thanks.

I checked my Super C book, and the vegetable cultivator will plow 6, 22 inch rows.

Are you rotating back and forth between corn and beans? Or, are you just handling the beans?

If you are just farming the beans, I'd stay with that 60 and go with a 6-row, 18-24" narrow arrangement. You've already got the best tractor ever built for narrow row beans.

Why do you think you have to split the hydraulics from side to side on your cultivator? Tie 'em together and lift the whole shootin' match at once.

If, on the other hand, you are rotating back to corn, I'd go with a 6-row 30" setup and a rear-mount cultivator to use along with your rotary hoe. That way, all equipment stays the same for both crops.

This would mean buying a three point hitch, but I'd still stay with that 60 John Deere for the 30 acres.

The key to running that canopy race on beans is to use an incorporated pre-emergant. This will stop everything from growing except your beans for 30 days.

Gives you a nice, managable head start against the weeds.

Technically the 200 series are all utility models, but as long as they have an adjustable wheel base (spin out rims) they work just fine for row cropping.

We've got a 285 and while it's a utility model, I'd rather drive that all day than a 1085 with the same engine etc. just raised up higher. They're also a very popular tractor around here. The dealer did a great job promoting them.

Don, I do know these things, have had Massey's in the past. I had two row cultivator on a 150 MF and it was in no way comparable to my Super C for cultivation work. I also had a 285 in the early 80's that you couldn't keep a head gasket on. Other than that it was a fair tractor and great for mowing hillsides. In 22 inch rows any tire over 10 or 11 inches will severly limit the number of trips through the field with a cultivator. There is a reason so many Farmalls were sold in the day of wide spread cultivating. With the single front wheel and 9 inch rears a 4 row vegetable cultivator these tractor can not be out done for cultivating in close rows. I have used a 50 JD,WD AC and a couple others. When it comes to cultivating The Farmall leads the way over all others. All tobacco in KY is cultivated and by a large margin Farmalls be it a Super A/100/130/140/C/ Super C/200 or 230 do the vast majority of it. Even die hard JD men here have a Farmall or two to plow tobacco with. I am by no means belittling any tractor make, I am just saying that nothing is as good as a old Farmall for small to moderate scale cultivation work.

You sure dont need 40hp to cultivate. Just think 15.5 tires are not good for 22in rows as the beans grow wider and not using weed control you have to cultivate several times.Making a four row 22in cult is easy using tool bar set-up going 8row will require guage wheels. My veggie cult for the A or BN FARMALL would work fine.

A 3010 or 3020 with narrow rear tires would work fine. In other brands an IH C or 504 would work great.

Oliver comes to mind, something like a 1600-1650-1655 or a 1550-1555, or a White 2-70. 15.5-38 was the most common size on them around here but other sizes were available abd common in other areas.

The front axels can be hard to move in/out if they haven't been touched lately, but they could already be set where you need them.
