Stopped in at the grocery store topick up stuff for the families craving for tacos tonight, this was at 7:35 am, walked out at 7:50 and see that the box on the drivers side from the wheel well to the tailgate is dented bad. Some A*#hole hit me and drove away. Grocery has awesome surveilence in the store , but none outside. No notes, no witnesses , nothing. Filed a police report and that is about all i can do. Its a 97 chevy 4x4 1ton. Older but it is my "new" truck, and my nice one. I only carry liability and comprehensive so I am SOL, looks like a will get do waste about a grand or more for some ones elses lack of manhood.

"Character" is defined as how a person acts when he knows nobody is looking. I agree that we're suffering a distinct downswing in character in this country these days, and its refreshing to see the stories of people who "came up to the plate" and settled up for the damage they could have just run away from.

There are some happy outcomes. Our daughter lives and works in Washington, DC, and parks her car (Saturn) in a parking garage in the basement of her office building.

Last month, she came out after work and found someone had knocked the drivers side mirror off. There was a note with a name and phone number under her windshield wiper. She called the guy and he told her to have it fixed and he would pay whatever it cost. Since the car was due to be serviced anyway, our daughter took the car to the Saturn dealer in Gaithersburg, MD, and they replaced the mirror in the process of servicing the car. The fellow who knocked the mirror off paid the portion of the bill that involved the mirror without hesitating.

Buddy's wife was in a parking lot last week, door open, loading groceries, guy with a trailer pulls in, damn near takes off the door with the trailer fender after she jumped out of the way to avoid being hit herself. His insurance co. says since no one was cited, they won't pay. It's the same insurance co. they have 6 vehicles and their home with. I told him to threaten to cancel all his policies. Car is pretty much totalled, took out the door, fender and worst of all the door post.

Sounds mighty familiar, was in the store early in the morning, come out and looking across the lot, I parked in one stall way out, and I see the light looking funny on my '96 mustang cobra convertible passenger door, same thing, hit and run, shoulda never took it out, but was only home on weekends then and I wanted to take er for a spin. One of 1549 made, worked my behind off to pay for it, really wanted to keep it original and in nice shape, was the 1st new vehicle I ever bought, 3 years before I was still driving an '80 K-10 chevy, and other various similar vintage vehicles. Just shook my head, state cop took a report.

Have a nice, XLT F-150, same year, '96 on the way to meet a client for an interview, some lady with nine suck$n puppies and no insurance rams me from behind, tailgate and bumper, following year, an old guy out of the teamsters local #280, in a F-450, working for a steel fabricator, caves in the side of the box, mind you I was legally parked on the street, was in the G.C.'s office dropping of some drawings and return to find this, well I got their insurance agent and also knew his boss, I did some picks for them on another job when I had a crane on site, no charge, did em a favor, told em you better take care of this or I will be all over your respective @ss. I kept my sense of humor and told the guy, should'nt you be retired already, we both laughed, what can you do ?

No sense in getting upset, but I'll be darned if you can't have something nice without some careless idiot ruining it for you, yeah it's just a friggin vehicle, but it sure lets the wind out of your sails when things like this happen.

My theory now is to drive an older vehicle with one fender the wrong color, they don't seem to bother those !!!

Check and see if your state has an uninsured motorists fund. Sometimes you can convince them to pay.

Swung dad's 60 Chevy pickup too wide pulling in at a movie theater one night and clipped a guys bumper back in '85. Didn't hurt the pickup and barely grazed the guys bumper, he probably would hae never noticed. I waited around for over an hour for the guy to come out and even offered him $200 cash to cover the damages since a scratch and a broken light lens were the extent of things. Heck at even at 17 I could have fixed it myself for less but I had the cash and figured on being fair with the guy. Needless to say dad got a call from the insurance two days later saying they wanted well over $1000 to fix the guys car. What a rip off. Got hit in the left rear while turning in the drive one night, in the same truck, by a hit and run driver. The other guy had to cross the line to hit me and hit me hard enough to slide the truck around in the drive. Thankfully it had a piece of 6" channel iron for a rear bumper so other than a bent bracket on the tail light, which dad straightened with his hand, there was no noticiable damage. Funny though, there were parts of the head light, the light bucket, the marker light, the hub cap, and assorted other pieces and parts lying in the road from the other car. Don't remember now what brand it was but I do remember that it was a higher end model. Don't know wether the other guy was drunk or what but I'd have hated to have been him the next morning when I saw what my little run in had done to my car. Served him right..... .

In Dec. 71, I came back from Viet Nam. I bought a new Monte Carlo and always parked out at the back end of parking lots. One day a thunderstorm came up and a really strong wind blew a loose shopping cart into the side of it. I was sick. I still park far off though.

Know what you guys mean, I park my "new" 01 F150 as far as I can fron anything that even has aremote chance of hitting it and I still have a dent behind the door from from a parking lot magician. Now i can put my old 91 F150 anywhere, next to the rattiest looking car in the lot, beside the cart corral, or where ever and nothing ever happens to it. Explain that!!

I had a neighbor's wife go through a section of fence 2-3 months ago. She lost it and ran off of the road. Even had her boy with her. Nobody was hurt (thankfully). We didn't hear (or even KNOW) about it until later that day when her FIL called and told my wife. He said that they'd fix the fence and all. Before I got the chance to call him back and tell him not to worry about it, they had already stopped by and replaced the post she hit. Point being - there still ARE people out there that DO call up and let you know. They could have disappeared and we would have seen the damage and been cusing some one. It's nice to know people like this still exist.

I try to part away from the front doors where everybody wheels in head first to get the closest lazy *ss spot. 98% of crivers can't backup in a 40 acre hay field let alone in a parking lot. Parking any place near to where people have to turn or meet other vehicles is just sitting in the bulls eye. For protection.I try to back in on a back row between two other vehicles that are not crowding the side of the parking spot. Nobody is going to hit the back of vehicle so 1/2 a win already. Just make certain there are no child seats or kids toys in the adjacent vehicles.

Last month I bought my wife her first "good" car a 2006 Ford Freestyle to haul the kids around in. A week later someone it the rear end while at WalMart and damaged the rear bumper to the tune of $450.

Why bother buying nice stuff when the trash of this world will screw of your and theirs.

That sucks.

When I was 19(?) it was pretty humbling walking back into the little market in town to ask who owned the Ford Probe out front...I managed to take out the rear quarter panel with my front bumper while backing out...

I feel your pain. I stopped in NY at a rest stop and went in to use bathroom and get a coffee. When I came out I had my right front fender smashed pretty bad. Its a car I bought new and didnt have a scratch on it. I looked around and asked a few people and no one saw anything . Sucks pretty bad ..... I can actually say if I did the damage I would stay and own up to it .

That sucks. The only thing that would make your day in a situation like that is if you had a heavy duty flatbed on the truck. Then the joke is on them! Sure you might have a scratches in the paint, but their vehicle would be much worse.

Makes you mad. We who are responsible citizens pay the price for those who aren't. My wife drove into a convenience store parking lot and was backed into by one of our 'insuranceless, licenseless' imigrants. If I remember right we had collision and liability but not comp. so when imigrant disappears from sight it was up to us to find him. Of course we never saw him again so I couldn't wring the money out of his neck. Jim

For as large of area and as high as it is, it must have been a pretty high vehicle, or van, being a ton with alot of heavy duty helpers springs, mine already sits high in the rear. I would also stay and fess up and offer to repair if ins coverage isnt adequate, but in todays society of "get away with whatever you can", there isnt many with morals or respect left. I am having problems with my stepson with the same thing, if he can get away with something by lying and denying he does, and then he lets the lies go and go , and go, that he cant even keep his stories straight, then he gets mad and says my memory is wrong and i didnt see or hear what i thought I did. At 11, it time he learns, but with another family in the picture it is hard to keep him on the right path, as I am ussually the strict and boring one.

I am in the same boat with the step son. Mine is 9 and his dad is a phycho/pathological liar/thief/scum/whitetrash/dirtbag so the kid goes over there and gets refresher courses on how to lie and deceive and manipulate his mother on a regular schedule. he keeps his skills sharp that way. I don't know seriously how long I can take this. I can see him growing up to be the same type of trash that crashed your truck. I am like you the one that is boring because all I do is work to provide and his dad like video games and stupid lord of rings movies and star wars and other fiction crap. Try getting a kid used to that into fixing tractors, welding or farming or having any responsibilities.

A couple of winters ago, a young gal ran into my "beater" work 1984 Suburban.

She did $3600.00 damage to her little plastic car, and "tweaked" a bumper moulding on my Sub.

It's AMAZING how all that modern plastic will break in below-zero temps!

I wasn't the least bit worried about the damage to my Sub, and my "pride of ownership" in the 'ole beater wasn't affected a bit, it was just another "battle scar" for the old girl!

A friend of mine drove a rusted out old Volare and some woman in a Lincoln got out in a hurry and slammed her door into his beater. He politely told her there was no reason for that. She shrugged her shoulders and said she was in a hurry. When she came back, she was slowed down just a little. My friend not only let the air out of her tires, he threw all four valve cores away. Maybe she got what she deserved. Dave
