Ford 4600 dash battery light won't turn off with key in and engine shut off. Brand new 4DLT battery . Put battery cables to solenoid/starter on backwards and smoked old battery 5 seconds, now with new battery, idiot light won't go off - afraid this will drain new battery.

Maybe there is a fuse burnt? Would simply pulling bulb out of battery light prevent draining battery?

Tom.

Replace the voltage regulator.... or if you wish, just install a Delco 10si alternator on there and be done of it.
You can buy the alternator for little more than the cost of the regulator....
I doubt the alternator is cooked, but if it is, it's probably handy 400 bucks, plus the REG that IS cooked which was 50+ the last time I bought one years ago. The Reman Delco's can be had for less than a hundred, without a core, from NAPA. Slight modifications to the lower and upper brackets, wire the idiot light, and you're in business.

I would say you fried the voltage regulator (if it has one) or another contact some where in the system, if this tractor has an alternator I would have it bench checked. Removing the bulb will only turn the bulb off. The bulb was put on the tractor to indicate a problem in the charging system. It works, so now it is time to troubleshoot the electrical system and find out what fried when you hooked the battery up backwards.

More than likely you also let the smoke out of the voltage regulator and the alternator.

Tractor starts and runs fine, but yes , I need to have them both tested to see if any damage was done. I'm thinking my more immediate need is to get this battery light to go off so it doesn't drain this new battery. At present I have the battery cables off when it's not running.

If the regulator is fried chances are that it will drain the battery.

Also if the regulator is fried and the alternator is not there is a chance of over charging the battery when you run it and if you run it long enough you will kill your new battery and battery warranty does not cover overcharging.HTH

OK, Greg and Gary, Thanks for the replies and warnings. I'm going to pull the voltage regulator and alternator off now and take them over to Pearland Alternator and have them tested.

But in the mean time, no harm can be done by starting and disconnecting the battery, other than some gauges may not work, and the battery will need charged once in a while.
