Brand of oil to use?

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in brands of hydraulic oil. The off-brands at the parts house is at least $20 per 5 gal. less than the John Deere, or Case IH brand. Is this extra for the name or is it that much better oil?

Purty darn sure some of that cheap oil is recycled. If I wanted recycled, I would dump the old stuff in a barrel, let it settle and scoop it off the top. Had a friend, engineer, that did that with 3 Mercedes for over 10 years.

Years ago Consumer Reports did a comprehensive test of motor oils which included name brand and genereic. The oils compared all met the same API standards. I read the test and it was very thorough and proffessional. They found no difference between brands of oil. As long as the product meets the manufactures standards, I am comfortable with it.

Make sure you are comparing like kinds of oil. The Case and Deere oil is a transmission and hydraulic oil with wet brake and other additives for use in transmissions/hydraulics with a common sump.Commonly called universal tractor fluid, and can be used in a hydraulic system also. There is also hydraulic oil which would be used strictly in a hydraulic only system.Doesen"t have the additive packages, hence the lower price. This cannot be used in a transmission with wet brakes.

There is a significent difference in oils, depending on the grade of base oil that you start with and the additives that are mixed with the base oil. The oil companies rate their own oil and can and will say anything, so buy your oil from a name brand manufacturer that has a reputation to uphold like Mobil or Shell. There are no doubt some good oils made by small unknown oil blenders, but there is no way you or I can know who they are.

I used to tell people the truth about oil but gave up because there are some who just don't want to hear it.
So this is what I say now: "Use any oil that meets the specs set down by the manufacture that meets what you are willing to pay for it."

I wouldn't worry about using the cheap stuff so long as it MEETS THE SPECS for your tractor. If it doesn't, then you're headed for trouble with wet brakes and clutches. If there's no wet brakes or clutches, then there's likely not much to worry about....
For what it's worth, I do my oil shopping in Walmart and Canadian Tire.

I can't say I know much about the new machines, but much of the less expensive oil in older tractors works just as well as the billgates oil. Some will tell you that the more expensive stuff has "secret ingredients" that make things last longer. The key with the older tractors is that all oil made today is ten times better than it was back in say the M or A days.

A lot of off brand oils are made by name brand companys. For instance O'reillys auto parts tores have there own brand of oil, but its made by Valvoline so its still valvoline oil just in the auto parts store label. So yes you can use the cheaper stuff unless like the other guy says you have a new tractor and have to worry about the papers that come with them

If it's an old tractor, any good quality hydraulic oil should be OK. If the tractor is in warranty, be careful. Some mfg tear up the warranty if you go off brand. Kubota will do that in a heartbeat. You either use their UDT/Super UDT or guess what? No warranty. I have a '49 WD that I use a 20w20 (I think) hyd oil from Fleet Farm. Works great. Original specs called for 30w non-foaming oil or hyd fluid. Non-foaming is key. You don't want little bubbles in your hydraulics.

There is a federal law on the books that protects the consumer from rip offs like this. I can't remember the number or the exact wording but the gist is this. If a MFG requires you to use a specific product, such as oil or filters, in order to maintain/honor their warranty they are required, by law, to supply you with that product free of charge. This, I'm told, is designed to keep them from monopolizing the sale of a product when there are others out there, that are readily available, that meet or exceed the same specs. In other words if they require you to use their oil, filters, etc to maintain the warranty on a machine this gives them a monopoly over the sale of those products. That monopoly allowes them to price gouge the consumer by asking higher prices for a product sold only by them when a similar or better product is or may be available elsewhere for a lesser price. Now wether the avarage consumer is able to make something like this stick should a problem occur is a different story since most tend to go with the flow and just spend the extra money so as to not get things stirred up. Til consumers really start banding together and standing up for themselves against the big mfgs their gonna keep buying overpriced products and getting gouged. But that's just my .02

I think you're right. What I related was told to me by a Kubota owner who was told that by the dealer. The dealer, it should be noted, not only sells Kubota but CaseIH, AGCO, Massey Ferguson and many different brands of oil, so I don't think it was entirely a matter of the dealer wanting to get the customer to buy only Kubota. My son bought a new BMW. To maintain the warranty, it has to be serviced with BMW approved synthetic oil and BMW filter. BMW does all of this free of charge through 60,000 miles. Then you're on your own.
