This is just an angry rant. My grandmother had a red Bennet antique gas pump on her farm, one that was proably from the early 1940s. They were made in Muskegon Michigan. People would stop and want it but they would turn them away. Well some low life dealer with his son stopped and scammed her out of it, as her mind is not well. He claims he is from the Grand Rapids michigan area. I am furious some low life scum would take such advantage, my grandma cant even produce the money and doesnt know who he is.

Dont think the pump would have just rotten away if no one took it. I very well knew its worth, as so did my late grandfather. It was in good condition, with little rust. I know what is valuable, and take care of things, as well as the other equipment of my grandads. If grandma was mentally with it, she never would have let him get away. I hope this guy comes back hoping to get his hands on something else of value and I can nab him, or I can find someone who knows of him. This guy drives a red chevy pickup and has a son with him in his 20's as I have seen him before and pushed him off. He supposedly is from the north end of Grand Rapids, perhaps has antiques for sale.

So why weren't you out at grandmas farm fixing the pump up and restoring it for her? It is really easy to blame sombody for what happened but you have to ask yourself what does the money have to do with you? If grandma is not totally about her wits maybe sombody should be staying with her to keep an eye on the farm. Yes there are people out there trying to make a buck buying antiques and fixing them up, they are called ambitious! If grandma has any more items you are worried about maybe it is time to get out there and help her out some. I am sure if grandpa saw the pump all fixed up he would have been happy about it. He probably lost interest in it 20 years before he passed away. People get sentimentally attached to items so much they keep them and let them rot away and they can become useless. Dad holds on to all his old stuff too but some of it probably should go to collectors and be brought back to new. If I outlive him I will probably have the choice someday to keep or sell items that are of sentimental value. The pump is probably long gone. Just learn from that and keep an eye on the place a little closer.

i have a reverse side of something like that.
friend of mine dad had a steering wheel cat. some chicago guys thought they were going to buy it from him. he kept telling them no i'm not going to sell it. the chicago guys found out leroy liked to drink whiskey. so they came out to leroy's farm with lots of it. they started drinking with him thinking they would get him drunk. all that happened was leroy had enough to drink that he couldn't stay awake so he went to bed letting them sitting at his kitchen table. they never bought the cat.

Can't win. We also see perfectly good equipment slowly rot into worthlessness even when potential purchasers offer good money. Now these rip off stories here will circulate again. More equipemt will decay as the owners are even more terrified to sell. Even when offered better than market price.

i wouldnt worry, most of the terrified owners out there wont see this story. if they read this forum they probably know what their equipment is worth.

If you get his name let me know. I have a friend going to a big show tommorow in Allegan, maybe that guy will be at that show pedaling that stuff.

That same thing happened in our family. My Dad had a Cletrack craler, a old caterpiller, and a old horse drawn wagen, where they could bee seen from the road. Some guy came in and asked Dad if he wanted to sell them. I don't know what actually took place. The guy ended up with all of them for almost nothing. Dad was in the early stages of alzheimers, and couldn't make good decisions. That was about 15 years ago. Stan

I ran across the same thing in Tenn. An old fellow at a massive junkyard. He couldn't stay on any subject very long. His son handled everything & was away. I left with nothing , of course, when I realized he couldn't do business, but I wonder how many people do take advantage.

Report it to the police. Even if they gave her money, if she isn't right upstairs they still took unfair advantage.

They are not just low-life scum. They are also common thieves.
