I finally got my new starter in so I can start the tractor now. The engine runs well for like 15 seconds then backfires like crazy. When I disconnect the #2 cylinder the backfiring stops. I should also add that when I pull that plug there is wet oil on it. I was thinking that it has either bad rings or a hole in the piston. When I run the engine with the plug out, oil doesn"t splash out like I have seen with an instance with a hole in a piston. Any ideas?? Thanks

this is a general symptom of an intake valve not seating due to excess carbon build-up. Take tractor out in the field and pull a plow. might work itself carbon-free

A compression test will answer your questions about hole in piston, worn rings or intake valve hanging up.

Put the spark plugs in opposite cylinders and see if the problem reverses. in other words disconnect # 1 and backfiring stops. There is a good chance that # 2 spark plug is breaking down.
