First of all, THANK YOU to all the veterans and active duty military that are reading this. When I returned from Viet Nam in Oct. 1969 I was literally spit at and called a baby killer when I got off the airplane in San Franscio airport. I was doing what I thought was the right thing for my country and following in my Grandfather and Fathers footsteps. Grandpa was a Marine in WW1, Dad, who just passed away last Dec, was in the Navy in WW2. I know that the Viet Nam "conflict" was very unpopular with my generation and that many eligible young men avoided the draft with either college deferments or running away to Canada. I guess that I can't fault them, everyone has to do what they think is right but I do wonder how many of my friends would still be here with me if we had gotten more support from the folks here at home. And yes, I do know that most of the problems were caused by our "friends" in Washington. Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my chest. I'm so glad that now our men and women serving are getting the respect that we didn't get 40 years ago.

We laid a good friend to rest this week. Capt. Lee Newbill was a police office shot by a sniper on May 19th in Moscow Idaho. He served in the Gulf War as a tank commander. He was a good guy and a great friend always able to make a good situation out of a bad one. We'll miss him dearly.

It's kind of odd to me that most will give Honor to the Dead --- although they like to remember them -- and that's O.K. but to give Honor is going over board.. they are Dead -- they don't know - they don't care - and their Souls are where God want's them to be after Judgment of the life they lead to HIM ... If you don't undersand this --- your not going to understand anything about the Dead until you Die ...

Joe,
You might be bit literal in your response to "honoring the dead". We're not lighting incense and worshiping them. To me it means honoring their memory and the MEANING of their life. I clean my Civil War vet great-grandfathers headstone each year and put a small US flag by it on Memorial Day. Do I worship him-NO. Do I respect and pay my honor to a man who left his farm and went with his neighbors to do what he thought was right at great personal sacrifice-hell YES! Does it remind me to live my life sacrificially and respectfully and help others today who make the same sacrifice- YES.
That to me is "honoring the dead" because I respect the meaning of what they have done. I pay the same honor to the troops today; doesn't always have to be a parade. Every chance I get I shake a hand and say "Thank You" as we all should.

Thank you for your response to my message... and I suppose your right from what you say --- I am also a Vet --- but I don't expect any one to thank me for the job I chose to do -- I did my best because I wanted to do my best -- and was paid for what I did. just as any job I hire on for.

I also worked as a Police Officer -- it a job I selected -- I did my best to do the job I wanted, I am NO Hero just cause I wanted to work as a Police Officer, and that goes for any employement at hand --

If it makes the one who is remembering the Dead and what they did --- Feel Good --- then I think that's what is important -- but to the Dead one -- they are gone and cannot see - feel - know any thing from the living -- and that's my point. let us teach the ones who are living to do as good or better then the ones we have lost..

You have good points in your message and I respect that... Joe

Joe while you might have chosen to go into the service, a lot of us were drafted. We had no choice.

Thank you Farmall49, I was 10 years old when you returned in '69, my late brother was my hero, he graduated high school in '65 and went to the Army , then to Nam, his suicide in '73 still bothers me, and I glued quarters to his stone and left a pack of cigarettes there too, I have told my wife and children the real story even though my parents and sisters believe their own story, since I am his only brother, I feel that I understand, and I speak for him even though some refuse to hear....
My son is a Lance Corporal Marine, got one tour of Iraq under his belt, we had the best trip recently driving his Lifted 4x4 F-150 across the country to California from Indiana, I cry just thinking how proud I am...
Again Thank you Farmall49, you did what was right! I apologise for my fellow Americans' behavior as they did not understand....You have a family history of those three wars, you need to write a book, or just a few stories on the computer.

Amen. God bless those Vets who have, even to this day, such patriotism and support for our country.
