Been wanting to ask this for the longest time. I take care of a LOT of grass at the Christian Camp and Retreat Center where I work, and have been thinking about trying to kill the dandelions and buckhorn plantain. The weeds are already well established and I'm afraid if I kill it, I'll be left with lots of brown spots among the grass. When is the best time of year to kill broadleaf weeds in the lawn without damaging the appearance? I'm not one of those guys that needs a manicured lawn, but the dandyline heads and plantain heads are tough to cut cleanly. Any ideas on how/when to spray? Thanks folks.

We spray in the spring usually 2-3 day after first cutting with Salvo and then again about a month later.

Thank you for the replies. If I can get my act together and finish building the sprayer, I'll take care of them this fall. I'd really like the bare spots to fill in with grass on their own. Way too busy in the spring to plant that much seed.

I live in the northern MO-southern IA area. Every October on a nice calm day, I spray my lawn with Trimec. Try to buy it at a farm chemical supplier and not the watered-down version at Wal-Mart. I put 2 ounces in each gallon of water and use a 14 gallon Fimec sprayer that I pull behind my garden tractor. Be sure to leave some distance between the sprayer and any flowers and shrubs. For these areas, you might want to use a hand held sprayer. Early morning with a dew works great. I always do it when the grass is in need of mowing. This way your sprayer will leave tracks and you will be able to get nice even coverage. I never have dandelions or clover the following spring. When you first start doing this, you may have some bare spots in the spring, but get out early with a garden rake and put some new seed in and you will have a beautiful lawn. Be sure to keep pets and kids off for at least a day after spraying. Good luck.

Early spring. My yard and the area around the barns is between 3 & 4 acres. I have a 15 gal. sprayer with a 6 ft. boom that I use on my yard tractor. Since your weeds are getting big you will probably have to use a higher rate. If you have centipede grass you can not use a high rate, thats why you want to spray early. I don't know where you live, but where I live from March 1 to April 1 is the best time if the weather is right. If you have clover to get rid of, 2,4-D won't do it. You will need something like Banvel. Don't overspray or mix your rate to high, this will only burn the top of the weed off and it will come back.

The best time is when the plants are active and growing which is usually the spring time. There is some evidence that fall spraying can be sucessfully done also. However if you spray them out now, the grass will usually start to fill in the bare spots.
Follow the label instructions. A small 3 pt boom sprayer works well for large open areas but a spray wand on a one galllon tank or a baxckpack sprayer work well in areas that have a lot of trees or shrubs. ATV tank sprayers are another option if you have an ATV to mount one on.

Have to disagree. Dandelions are perrenials and the best time to kill them is in the fall when they are translocating nutrients down into the roots. That is the only way to kill the plant-root and all. 2-4-D will do a good job then. It is a waste of time to spray them with 2-4-D in the spring. It vwill onlt burn the tops back then. Dicamba or Trimec will do a fair job in the spring, but won't completely kill the whole plant unless its in the fall either.

I use MSMA...It is cheap, but you can't use it on St Augustine. 80-90 degrees spray twice 14 days apart.
