Look where Billy has shown you. The model number will be a three digit number. The serial number is stamped just below the model number. It will be something between 77271 and 116367 if it's a 1956.

The three digit model number will start with a 6. Possible model numbers are: 620, 630, 640, 650, 660. The model number tells you which transmission it has and a few other items. Here's a brief synopsis:

620: bare bones model with no hydraulics and pto optional. 4 speed trans.
630: Step up from the 620. Has three point hitch, but no proofmeter. 4 speed trans.
640: Another step up. Probably the most common model of the 600 series. Has pto, three point hitch, proofmeter.
650: Same as a 640 except with a 5 speed trans.
660: Same as a 650 except for the addition of a dual clutch and live pto. All other 600 models have transmission pto.

Get a manual....not an I&T manual, but the Ford factory shop manual with the red/black cover. Reprints are readily available from most online tractor parts suppliers for $18 - $25. There's usually half a dozen of them on ebay on any given day.

I've done that job and while I wouldn't call it easy, it's definitely do-able. But you'll want a manual. You'll need a torch, a good drill and a good sharp chisel. There is also a bearing puller described in the manual that most people won't have, but I can help you construct one that works out of ordinary materials. Contact me for details after you've read about the procedure in the shop manual and are ready to proceed.

Jim

Left side of the tractor just behind the starter under the battery theres a flat spot with both the model # and serail #. if its a 1956 it would be a 601

Don't want to dispute, but the 600 and 800 series were sold in '55, '56, and '57. The first 601's were built in late '57 and offered for sale in '58 through '62.

model number should be stamped into casting on top of clutch housing.
