Lets pick a tractor!

I need a tractor (with a loader) for some personal landscaping, drive way grading, snow removal and general limited use.

I am looking for suggestions on a good model to look for. I would be willing to install a loader if it was readily available.

I want to buy a small 3 point hitch backhoe so I need the ability to easily run hydraulics to that.

I imagine that I need a live PTO to run a pump for backhoe? Or live hydraulics?

4 cylinder gas with power steering. Could probably live without power steering if I had to.

Max $5000 to spend. I am currently looking at a international 2504 with loader for $5000.

Thanks!

I have nothing against the little TO 20 or 35 Massey, but in reality neither has the hydraulic ability or weight to handle a backhoe attachment. I have seen 2 or 3 485 CaseIH tractors sale lately in the 5000 dollar range. These tractor have syncronized transmissions, 17 GPM hydraulic pumps or larger. 3 cylinder diesel engine that will run for days on a tank of fuel. Oh did I mention that you can get parts for the 484/485/495. The TO 20 is hard to get parts for, I know I have one. The 2504 seems a little high to me, but that is me and I haven't seen the tractor or loader. However it is a better choice than either of the little Massey's for loader work.

Me, I'd be looking for a Massey-Ferguson 35 or 50. The only drawback there is many of them have large FE loaders that make them very front heavy so the tractor ain't so "nimble" for your landscaping and other tight spots.
We had a Davis loader on ours and that dude was HEAVY. The tractor was simple to maintain and operate and I think you could find one in your price range.

What about a TO20 ? I am looking at one of them right now. The guy says it has a live PTO attachment. The problem is it has a trip bucket. I spent half a life time in the welding machining business so mods are no trouble. I just don't have the time to do a lot. But could hook up a cylinder mount. The hydraulics on the otherhand I dont know about that.

Another thing on the backhoe attachment, I want to be able to quickly take it on and off. It will be very light duty.

Thanks guys, The backhoe would be lightly used. Like planting trees and stuff. No house foundations.

What about an international 340 with a loader for $3500?

A tractor with a loader is a handy thing to have, but..... .. a "small 3 point" backhoe? These things can put a lot of stress on a tractor. Unless I had a specific project that would require a backhoe for more than 2 weeks at a time, I would just rent a hoe when I needed one. Just MY opinion.

When looking for used equipment don't restrict yourself. There are many good machines out there in your price range with 3 cyl. engines, diesels, etc. Do stick with "name brands". Ford, IH/Farmall, Case, JD, Massey Ferguson, Kubota, etc., all have parts available, service data available, and if ya make a poor choice, buyers are out there willing to take it off your hands.

Live PTO and live hydraulics are both highly desireable features.

Just my opinions, but you did ask.

I think you would be better off looking for a used older backhoe Ford, Case etc it will have some issues, but your talking about buying a backblade, and 3 pt backhoe that adds up.
