Just wondering if others have this problem.. ? People stopping by, wanting to buy trucks, tractor, etc that are in the yard.. Nothing is for sale here, and I do not get upset, if someone just stops to ask, as long as they are not pushy.. The ones that really get me mad are the ones that tell me that I do not need this or that, or that they need it worse than I do.. What ^&%$ business is it of theirs, whether I need something or not? I bought and paid for what I have, and it is mine to do what I please with.. If I want to sell something, I would put it out on the road, with a sign and price. I was raised to respect privacy and property, and that a person's possessions are theirs to do as they please. I really makes me mad, These jerks tell how they need a good truck, tractor, etc... But all most of them are just looking for stuff to sell at a profit.. Rant Over

I'm lucky that our driveway dips downhill & most of my stuff is hidden from the road. My cousin usually runs into that problem, some will see his truck, tractor, or piece of equipment & ask if its for sale. A few times he has actually sold something for a nice profit, more than he would asked setting out on the road. I'm not surprised if & when he sells, he's one of those people that doesn't get attached to anything, me on the other hand never wants get rid of anything.

I been having similar problem as I have all my equipment setting outside the shed to do my field work and seem like at least once a week someone has to stop by and take up a lot of my time to ask me when the sale is. even after I point to the plowed or planted fields and ask them if they dont think i been using all the equipment they still say they thought it was getting lined up for a sale. I guess because I use older machinery they dont think I farm with it but I sure get tired of them bugging me. Worse is when you ask them if there is something they are wanting to buy they say no just thought there might be an auction. Go figure! And people wonder why I carry a shotgun!!

If you had, for example, my father's old John deere "A", I would harass you until you eventually give in to your greedy desire for money and sell it to me.

Jim, in a case like that, I would probably sell something to a person that had sentimental ties.. Heck, I might almost give it to them, if they wanted to restore it to stay in the family.. But, I do not have a "Greedy" desire for money.. I do not see why I am greedy just because, at the present time, I do not wish to sell certain items..I use all of the things that are parked in the yard.. So why should I sell things that I need, only to have to go out and hunt things to replace them? The worst part is, most of the people that stop by, have a story about how badly they need an item, but all they are wanting to do, is to buy it cheap, and sell it at a profit.. No offense intended, just making a point..

I am kind of the person you are talking about, except that I park on the other side of the road. I leave very quickly if someone says no. HOWEVER... I see no problem with offering someone money... after all, having money is your benefit... so there isn't too much you can do except hide all the stuff you have.

rant or no rant, I GET offers too on my 'junk', but I let them because I offer people money for their junk!

I think I will start saying that anything here is for sale, and quote them a price that is a little more than what a brand new item will cost.. Some folks that stop by, just have a way of making me mad, like the ones that start talking about what bad shape the item is in. I usually ask them why they would want it, if they find so much wrong with it? By then, I am at the point that I would scrap it, before I would sell it to them..

In my travels around the country I sometimes stop by and ask if a particular item is for sale. If they say no, I say thank you and leave them my information - let me know if you change your mind. Telling someone what to do with their property is stupid - I know I don't want to be told what to do with my possessions!

Sell a tractor, truck, trailer or clawhammer....but don't ever let go of your land, especially to "house and lot" folks. They might be real nice neighbors, but who will they sell the property to in a few years?

Had a guy stop by and want to buy Dad's old Chevy truck. Turned him down. Next day I got a visit from the code enforcement officer and he had gotten a complaint about a junk unlicensed (it was still licensed) truck on my property. I moved the truck into the polebarn and like clockwork the other guy stopped that afternoon wanting to know what I did with the truck. "well sir, I cut it up for scrap", code enforcement said it had to go. 'well I wanted to buy it!', "well tough s**t pal!" And if you don't leave and stay away, I'm calling the cops about you hassling my underage daughter!
Haven't seen him even drive by since.

Maybe I should bring some of my stuff over to your place ?

That is because lots of these folks, particularly the scrap man wants it for nothing, they want you to think they are doing you a favor by hauling it off for you. Might try removing the for sale signs.

Yikes. Its one thing for someone to ask if something is for sale. I don't so much mind that. If someone started talking about "I need it more than you," or, "what are you going to do with it?" That would tick me off.

I haven't had too many problems with people stopping by. I think one person asked about an old Chevy I had in the driveway for the longest time, but they were a neighbor and were polite, so I didn't mind.

However, what really got my goat was when my Dad died. 3-4 days later the vultures started stopping by, bugging my Mom. One redneck asked about an old van we had. The local real estate agent dropped by to offer her condolences, and started asking if Mom was going to sell the house. Mom told them both to pound sand.

I have learned my lesson though. Only daily drivers are out in the open for everyone to see. All other vehicles and equipment are kept out of sight, most in locked buildings.

I have the same trouble with scrap iron men. They stop and ask about every piece of rusty junk sitting here, and I tell them right up front none of this junk is for sale and every time they will say well what about that or what about this, you don't have any use for that junk. Who are these people to decide what I have use for or don't have use for. I had one man want my dads M and I told him that my dad gave it to me and was not for sale at any price and he kept telling me they weren't any good for anything to start with. He must have thought I looked like a pure idiot. I finally called the dog out from under the porch and he left. One neighbor has tried to buy my Super C ever since I painted it 10 or 12 years ago. I finally told him if it was for sale it would have for sale signs all over it, and he still asks about it every time he see's it.

The scrappers here are nothing but thieves.. I bought some machinery, and had some parts stored under the shed at the dock at our shop.. A scrapper stopped by on a Friday, wanting to get the parts.. I told him that they were not junk, that they were parts for a machine we had.. Monday morning, the parts were gone, rendering several thousand dollars worth of machines worthless..

Davis, I couldn"t agree more. But, there are two sides to every coin.... What gets me , is when I see the postings on this board, with someone complaining that, "guy down the road has a tractor just sitting there rusting away, and refuses to sell it! Can"t believe some people would rather let it rust away, instead of selling it to me. What a waste!" Maybe not the exact words, but along those lines. My feeling is, if you own it, it"s your business.

Yep I've had the same problems off and on. What I do is price them so if they do buy I can replace it with 3 or 4 more. As in like on my 1935 JD-B I tell them $100,000.00 not a penny less. So far I have had no buyers yet.

Reason for that big price tag on the B is that it was my grandfathers tractor and I can trace its history all the way back to around 1940. I didn't set that price on it either but my mom did it was her fathers tractor. We also have the owners manual that came with it when new. All my other tractors are priced as they should be that is if I want to sell them that is. If I don't want to sell then yes I price them high so if some one does buy I can affrod to more then replace them

I did use that Case 930 yesterday. I figured I would have to put the charger on it before it would fire up but I was wrong it fired right up as if it had been just yesterday since I had and it had sat for more then a month. I hooked it up to a tree about 8 inch in diameter and I broke a 1/2 inch cable like it wasn't even thre. I then hooked up my heavy chain and the tree went bye bye fast. The 930 didn't even notice it was back there

If it's that much of a problem put up a sign at the end of the drive. " nothing for sale here, keep out" or "Will trade old worn out tractor for your new Lexis plus cash."
Don't have that problem here.

Hugh , that does not work . A few years back i bought a 806 D off a guy in western Indiania that was his dads so it was a one owner and still in org. paint with 4300 hours , brought it home and started fixen all the littel stuff that had been let go over the years and spent three days cleaning it up added a super nice paint job and a new seat as this one was going to be a keeper had several people ask about it and told them that this one was MY tractor to farm with . While i was working on a carb for a M one cold overcast fall day i had it setting outside the shop i heard someone pull in and was thinking now who is this as i did not reconize the truck . This guy walks in that i had never seen before and he asked about the 806 setting outside i told him that is not for sale well he kept asken about the price on it kept tellen him that it was not for sale but he would not take no for and answer sooooo i layed a price on him that i figured would put the vapor lock on him at 8750 as you could buy a 806 anywhere for 4500-5500 , all he could say wa OH ok and turned around and walked out the door all the while i was chucklen to myself thinking how i took the wind out of his sails and went back to work . About 20-30 min. later i hear another car pull in and here he comes again this time with his old lady he just asked how i wanted the check made out . That taught me a lesson that it seams that if i want to keep a tractor for myself DON'T clean it up Don't paint it and never put a price on it and let everybody know that it is PLUM JUNK . After the one spring of going thru 9 tractors while tryen to get my field work done with people litterly buying them out from under my donkey i was hiding them during the day from sight from the road and people were tracking me down in the field . one field took three tractors to get it plowed .

our family's number 2 overused quote by stoppers by is: "but i need it"
number one is: how much do you want for ____ (which happens to be inside a shed or etc that we don't even know about!!) nothing wrong with askin about somethin in plain sight and accepting our "not for sale" reply, but askin about something that is inside a building you never had permission to access? words cannot desribe...
it's everywhere, they're everywhere. they make it impossible for honest ones to have a chance. things are so bad, i'm afraid to ride atv or work on a tractor on my family's land because of the invitations the bad apples infer from what they observe me doing...

Wow,

Never had anyone show up and inquire about any of my gems. I'm like the guys that put it out front with a sign and nobody looks at it... but I do have "buyer" issues.

My problem is with the stuff I do sell, like on Ebay. The people who want to pay cash at pick-up show up and want to inspect the item as if I had it at the end of the road for sale. I don't get it. I'm not selling "junk" and if it needs work I've already described it in the auction ad. I can't help that these last minute bidders don't bother to ask questions and don't read the description. I sell "as is, where is"... I can understand alittle tire kicking to be sure what I described was accurate but it would be nice if these individuals would understand that they aren't bidding for the right to just come look. You bid to win, get the top bid and you bought it.

I'm always leery about the guys that pull in and start asking questions. I usually drop the shop door and such. No need to let anyone see my "treasures". I feel like the rest of you. They are mine and if I want to share them I will.
