I'm in need of some galvanized parts. Some 90 degree brackets, so shed door hinges, and a few other hardware parts. ALL of these new parts are are electroplated with zinc and rust within 2 years when explosed outside. They are a flippin joke. You guys have no idea how pissed off companies make me now a days. This throw away society will be the end of me!!

Does anyone know of a site to purchase hot dipped galvanized hardware? I need a site that accepts money order or paypal. I want the good stuff. It's such a shame and so darn misleading when they call it galvanized and its got a .5 micron layer of zinc on it. Dad was telling me at work (hes an electrician), that when they bend some of the galvanized conduit that the plating crackes right off!!. This is right up there with permenantly lubricated motors and plastic bushings instead of bronze!!!

Thanks for any help guys

Try McMasterCarr, I don"t know that they"d have anything that was hot dipped but I know they have several different varieties of spray or brush on cold galvanizing compound. I used to work at a hot dip galvanizing company and when the guys on the yard had to do a touch up job where they ground off a drip, etc they used the spray on type for that. The main thing is you want a layer of zink to act as an anode and "draw" the corrosion by sacrificing itself instead of allowing the base metal to be attacked. As long as you can acomplish that be it a hot dipped piece or a cold applied piece you ought to be alright.

Wayne, dad has cases of cold galvanizing compound "paint" Kinda weird after it dries, its like powder or something. It works tho as long as the stuff isnt scratched off.

I just need about 100lbs of zinc and a big vat and a good source of heat and I could dip my own =)

I agree with you - however. The el-cheapo electro-plating sometimes used now - in more like the original galvanic process that used an electric reaction for plating - not hot dipping.

Hot dipped parts are certainly better - but not actually "galvanized" when using the original meaning of the word.

uhmm no...

to coat (metal, esp. iron or steel) with zinc

It doesnt matter if its electroplated, hot dipped, painted on, or zinc coming out of your but and falling on steel. =P

electroplated zinc might be better if its thicknesses were equivilant to hot dipped. That is the reason they use electroplated, so they can use as little zinc as they can and call it galvanized. It's a flippin joke and is enough to make people like me insane because so many people buy the crap and wonder why it rusts. But what are you to do when its the only thing readily available anymore. This country and world is turning to crap!! In 50 years people will have to go to a museum to see a grease zerk. There will be exhibits on what used to make equipment reliable before the disposable society revolution!!

ARGH Technology can make the world a better place, but it can just as easy screw us over.

Sorry, had to vent =)

 Sorry chief - I'm not wrong . . . in reply to JayWalt, 05-16-2007 22:04:47
Sounds to me like you want to re-write history and word-meanings. What exactly does "uhmm no" mean?

I DID put my comment in historical context.

The orignal use of the word "galvanize" referred to the disovery by Luigi Galvani - and refers to a certain affect electricy has on certain items. It simply meant, at first, "electric effect." His first experiments were with dead animals - making them twitch by shocking them. It then became more commonly used for the process of metalplating with zinc by the use of electricity.
Thus the term "galvanize." Later on, and now, the term is used more loosely to any sort of zinc-coating process.

So, I ask again - "uhmm no" to what? The historical record?

Have you tried McMaster-Carr? I know they have a website and you can pay with credit card, probably have way to mail in order. I have bought stainless steel piano hinges from them for wastewater plants. Another option might be with a chain link fence supply company. Good Luck.

Check into supply houses that furnish hardware for commercial fishing boats, shrimpers etc. Most of them still carry heavy galvanized hinges, bolts hooks ETC. When I was living on our boat we used to go to these places to buy chain, clevis, etc because they only handle the best. Fishermen will not put cheap stuff on their rigs. Try goole11
