My BIL came over today and we cut down some dead trees and I used my neighbors big tree chipper. I have from what I can tell 5 ash trees that are just about dead from the emerald ash borer, We cut down a large ash tree and I got 30 logs 12" diam. from it.

Is this bug a flying bug? Is this bug all over the USA?

I came down Rt 33 into Oh. from In. and they had signs up stating there was a $4000 fine for moving Ash firewood south.

A few years ago, I went to my bils place in Plymouth. We cut down about 20 ash trees of varying sizes, all dead. Never seen any disease kill everything. Didn't know it liked maples tho. That could be a real problem as sugar maples are much more common around here than ash trees. I believe most ash trees in our area were planted as ornamentals.

The same bug that is hitting the ash tress will destroy the maples too? I sure hope not.

The Emerald ash bore and Asian long horned Beetle are TWO different insects. One is Enerald green and the Asian Beetle is black with white spots. The Sugar Maples are in for a problem if the Asain long horned Beetle makes it into Vermont. The Enerald Ash bore host tree is only the Ash.

Excellent flyer - roots was Michigan now in many mid west states. Moves best on long hauls in fire wood and logs with bark and any kind of crates or dunnage from China - only in ash trees - another big hodad from China. Is the Asian long horned Beetle. This one is rather a lazy mover, but moved here from China in wood crates. Loves Maples. As for Emerald Ash borer. It is here to stay. Clear cut is the only possible control at the present. Don't let anyone sell you a snake oil cure. None at the present. Base ball bats will be on the endangered list in a few years. Remember the Dutch Elm problem in the 60's? Where abouts are you?

Central MI. We are just spinning our wheels with these regulations. There are semi loads of wood chips and mulch moving all over the state. You cant tell me there aren't infected ash trees run through those chippers. The laws are uninforcable!! The only hope we have is that one of our fine feathered friends in the woods gets a craving for these delicasies and takes care of them before they get under the bark and hide. At least it's not a disease! Insects will eventually meet a predator. It's natures way.

The only way ash trees can be used for any purpose is if they are debarked. I run a landcape company that covers GR and Detroit and have done alot of research as to what can be done with the 100 or so ash trees I have had to cut down. The lumber can be used for anything as long as the trees as debarked before leaving the quarentined area. The trees that are chipped are not supposed to be shipped outside the area either, unless the are debarked before chipping.
