Mornin' All,

As of this morning, I am officially "out of feed". Last year's hay is all fed up, and the yearlings are going out to pasture this morning.

Been fixing fence all week; I'm gonna give 'em the last feeding of grain this morning and then open the gates and let the little darlin's find their own living for awhile.

Doctored (castrated/shots) that one new baby the other day and I just don't think he likes me very much any more. :>)

Watch 'em closely for bloat. First time on pasture after a diet of dry hay cam be a pretty dangerous time.

In the Southeastern part of Tennessee I would say about half uses the rubberband method and the other half uses the knife. Personally on our farm we use the rubberband. We usually have between 25 and 35 head. This year we have had only 2 males born the rest females. Out of a total of 8 so far. We still have several to be born though.

Hey Allen got a question for you. When I was getting my ag degree we castrated sheep shortly after birth using the rubber band method, easy for us and I know had to be much less pain for the sheep.Just wondering if this has ever been tried with the cattle?

Oh Yeah,

I've used the bands since forever. The trick is to get that darned lariat around their head first. :>)

Yes it has Rich.

And it works but the wound stays open longer than a knife cut does. If you have any diseases on your farm, such as lock jaw, they are more apt to catch them. BTDT

Oh my god! I just read the Wikepedia and another page on Burdizzos...it said that some HUMANS either use them on themselves or have a friend do it for them because of the intense pain, they want to become eunichs or change their gender....I don't think I'm gonna walk right all day after reading that.

I probably would have been money ahead if my dad would have thrown me on the ground and did that back when I was about 13. :>(

I don't know who was credited with coining the phrase--"You can take my money, my pride, my truck....just don't take my fellas." (fellas = family jewels etc)

Besides the obvious reasons I am glad I am intact, I am thankful for my kids too!
