This morning's events reminded me of that exact moment in time when ya suddenly realize you've just lost a fist fight.

At that point, ya plain don't care any more and you just want that other fellow to quit hitting on you 'cause it feels soooo darned good when it's over! :>)

Gotta go out there and seal it up and then I'm forgetting this little episode. :>(

Hi Allen, let me start by saying I know this is like apples and oranges. Last year I plowed and disked a 1 acre food plot for a very small covey of quail and a few turkeys we have around the house. After plowing with a Super C I pulled an 8' disk with the old H in 3rd. It beat the crap out of me and I learned why you don't put your thumbs inside the spokes of the steering wheel. After all the ice melted spring and before all the rains came {around Easter} I got in there a pulled the old disk over it to turn the stubble under from last years plot, and wow did it ever work up nice. After several pass's and then a few trips with a spike tooth harrow it looked like the infield of Wrigley field. Right now the milo and millet is about 8" high and the clover is just popping up. I know I cant compare my little plot to your He man farming but I think from my "small" expierence you will have much more fun with it when all that old sod is gone.

Yeah,

It rolled out of there really, really nice. The upper half was in old alfalfa/crested wheatgrass for the past 35 years. The lower part was virgin sod.

Don't think the gentleman from PA understands that it has to be plowed as rough/deep as humanly possible and was left that way on purpose.

Out here, the wind blows and as a result, I now own part of my neighbor's farm. :>)

I think he's referring to the pictures from the plowing competition. The furrows looked pretty smooth. Dave

Yes, I guessed that's probably what he is referring to.

However, in the real world that is exactly what ya don't want for fall plowing. At least in this wind-swept country anyway. :>(

Never plowed out "west", does anyone use a "drag" anymore? Ten or twelve foot long metal beam, usually one behind another, pulled over after plowed ground has "set", then disc. It sure softens up the ride. Got in a hurry this year to beat rain and didn"t drag, "bout beat me to death.

Will you be seeding that down to hay later this year or will it be going to wheat? It can be a pain getting them smooth but we've had some rough hay fields in the past and now I'm willing to make as many passes as needed to get them perfectly smooth before seeding. We've got some alfalfa that I made six tillage trips on before seeding but now you can drive across it in a truck at 30 mph without feeling a bump and it's almost fun to make hay off of.

A set of radials on the back and a rack of ft weights along with straddel duals on radials with the air pressure set at 14 lbs ya would never feel a bump . and a bigger disc. Ya got the 1066 and that should be the prime tillage tractor

Was it legal to plow up buffalo grass. Was that virgin sod? Whats her name will be after you. I grew up with a narrow front tractor with steel steering wheel . Sholders still show the effect. Recomend tylenol with codeen, or 2 fingers of black jack.

Amen Allen. The Graham Rudman act placed limits on the slope of ground that could be plowed here, or face looseing price supports on tobacco about 20 years ago. What they failed to realize that lots of farms here espeacially in the mountains have a limited amount of ground to work with and some is hilly. We plowed a piece one year, about 4 acres out of 185, that ASCS (FSA) deemed to steep and revoked my price support. They not only revoked support on that farm, but on every crop I had rented. Most of it was on shares with a landlord and the landlords half was supported. When I sold it the buyers wanted to know why I had no support and the auctioneer told them the story and they gave 2 dollars a hundred more for it than my partners supported tobacco brought. It was repealed. Since the buyout there are no longer any support programs to worry with.

Actually, when I was a kid, Dad had me knock down the fall plowing with a 560 and John Deere seven section spiked tooth harrow. Third gear seemed fast and with that big harrow, it seemed like I got a lot done in a day. 'Course I was only 14 and I think I bounced a lot better in those days!

I a couple weeks I've got to do that on my place. The sod has been dying for year and a half but I'll be doing it on a Super M. Trying to kill raspberries. Seems to have worked but now I've got to smooth it out so we can plant trees. Then plow up the next patch...

Yup....makes slow dancin' with a chain saw running at full throttle look like a good time, don't it! I used to get the fever to plow once in a while, then after I had to knock it down the next spring, chiseling looked like an awful good job! Take a couple Aleve and have a Snapple. :>)

Last year I tried this stunt with my little 686. Had to bail out and borrow my friend's John Deere.

This is a 20 acre patch of buffalo sod that I plowed up back last September. Then let it "soak" over winter to let the freeze/thawing soften it up a bit.

The soil really worked down nice this morning, although it was right on the edge of being too wet; all I gotta do now is to seal it and wait for the summer rains and the eventual passes of the summer fallow equipment.

Never heard of Homer, so it must be back east in the "other" Nebraska? :>)
