The price of electricty in this part of the world has gone crazy and we are about go crazy also.Have changed companys(brokers) about four times trying to keep cost down.Starts off low then when they get you signed up they start going up,up,up.Last month,s bill was about 8 cents kw hour whitch was wonderful but we here next will be more like 17 or 18.We have had bills in the 400 $ range whitch makes it real tough.

our electric co offers( or did at least) 1/2 price water heating, they only garentee power to the water heater from midnight til 6am daily, but with a bigger tank we do not run out of hot water normally, might want to look into that.

Virgil, depending on your house and climate you might find that an add-on heat pump water heater is the best bet.

Ours is about 3x more efficient than the electric tank heater and gives off a byproduct of cool dry air. Dehumidifies the house nicely while cooling it a little- for free. Paid for itself in just over 1 season. We use ours when the house temp is naturally over 70º, right about now until October.

Next cheapest would be solar.

I took out the 30 gallon propane hot water heater last fall and put in an 80 gallon Sepco stone lined electric hotwater heater. The electric bill doubled to about $160 a month. The upside is that the propane was costing about $230 a month. So right now electric is cheaper even at $.17 per KWH. Ferrellgas is pretty much history in this area.

We are all electric except for the wood stove in the basement, and our electric bill never went that high all winter. We're on SEIREMC, they will pay something toward an energy audit, check with your electric company. Also you could get a water heater blanket, they are supposed to help hold down costs.

i should have added eletric company raised the rates jan 1. we were told would be 24 % max. yea right. it has gone up every month since. bill for april was $25 - $30 than march. i have heater for waterer turned off so it isn't using any electric. so bill should have gone down not up.
unground wires have been disconneted as somebody backed his truck into conduit and broke wires somewhere. so wires were ran over head. i need to know how btu needed to heat gallon of water and how to figure out what cost for btu of gas is vs. cost btu of electric.

Gas is good heat but since propane and natuaral gas are so expensive I would stick with electric. We usesd a propane heater to heat two rooms of the house to 70 this winter cost us over 300 $ for two months. Am now in process of installing new electric furnace. Electric bills for whole rst of house( about double the space) incl water dryer etc only about 150 per month to 70 this last cold winter.
