Hi All -

I hope this link isn't inappropriate, but here are some amazing photos from the Greensburg JD dealership:

A friend of mine in law enforcement fairly near there sent me this in email with this explanation:

Hays resident Brad Riney was in the sleeper cab of his blue tractor trailer truck waiting to deliver a John Deere combine to the implement dealer in Greensburg, Kansas., when Friday's tornado struck. Here are photos he took of the aftermath of the devastating tornado.

These are photos are something sure worth looking at. Can anyone tell me how to transfer them to my email address at plumor@yahoo.com???? I went thru Greensburg on the 12th and 14th of April 2007 and also stopped at one of the nicest antique malls a couple blocks south of hwy. It was in a old church and I think the young lady working said it was converted to the antique store about 25 years prior and her and her husband had owned it for 5 years or so. It still had all of the old asbestos covered steam lines in the basement. I wish the best for everyone in that area.

These photos are amazing. I'm surprised the combine is still on the trailer. Back in 1985 I visited a tornado area in western PA. I saw a six bottom plow that had every bottom twisted and the beam was bent. Near by was an IH combine that was about six feet tall and crushed. These were apparently picked up and dropped.

Greensburg has a population of about 1600. 90-95 percent destroyed. Been through there probably 100+ times. JD dealer is the first major business as you enter town from the west. Greensburg Tractor and Implement is/was a major employer, possibly one of the largest equipment dealers in KS. A lot of people out of work, in addition to no place to live. There is another JD dealer with the same ownership in Bucklin, 20? miles SW of there, the tornado apparantly missed that one.

The BTI-GTI JD dealer there has two more. One in Bucklin SW of there on hwy. 54 and another at Ness City north of Dodge City. See them advertise regular in Fastline and they always have lots and lots of combines and other equipment on their place. Makes you wonder how many machines and jobs that will take out of the harvest run soon.

I didn't know about the one in Ness City. Also don't know the effect on harvest. Custom cutters are declining because of high fuel costs. Some farmers have their own combines, others depend on custom cutters, others lease combines for harvest. The greatest effect may be repairs, and difficulty finding parts due to no dealer in that immediate area. However, JD and CIH usually have semi trailers stocked with parts that the factory (or regional represenatives, etc) send out. That will help take up the slack. Unlike Case-IH, Deere is in about every town of any size, I imagine the surrounding dealers will help take up the slack. Harvest in that area is about a month or 6 weeks at most away depending on what the weather does between now and then.

Not inappropriate at all Howard . Brad and all the others are VERY lucky to be alive . Only nature gone balistic could do such total devastation . I'm sure everyone here in Australia especially those of us in the Rural community send all our prayers & fortified-wishes to all those affected . Our hearts go out to them all . James on PILILANI Property in Far North Queensland, Australia - God bless & stand with them all !! !!

Thanks Howard,
WOW everyone sould take a look. This kinda knocks the wind out of ya when you think this all was over in maybe 40 seconds! I know the insurance will sell some for scratch and dent but most all of those machines cost more that my little house! That is one huge dealership. Can't get over how the toys are still on the shelf.Jeffcat

Walt -

I didn't take these - that was a trucker who apparently was parked at the JD dealership when it struck... From the looks of his truck, he was on foot after the tornado to take this album of pictures, hence most are centered around the dealership.

Maybe that's why most of his pics are of that location. That is just my guess.

If you are curious for more, the local sheriff dispatcher also sent me this link:

It was on the radio news here in New Zealand about that tornado, knew they could be powerfull things, but to move combines about and do that sort of damage I had no idea. Can that lot be got on insurance? or are some unfotunate people going to lose thier business or living from that distruction?

I can't imagine them NOT having insurance with what equipment like that is worth these days..

But also, in talking about it over lunch with some farmer friends, I'll bet it took out a bunch of wheat fields on either side of town, and I'd guess those farmers might be out of luck - since some hail insurance wouldn't necessarily cover tornado damage to the wheat.

Sort of like the "wind blown water" versus "flood damage" that the insurance companies argued about in New Orleans...
