I have a 1963 Massey-Ferg w an after-market front end loader that is barely working. I don't know if the pressure from the hydraulic pump is too low, or if the hydraulic rams are rusted and/or damaged. Can someone recommend a means of troubleshooting and repairing.

Need a bit more info.
Does the tractor have more than one pump on it ? ie is the loader and 3 point ran off the same pump ? If so does the 3 point lift work ok ?

the loader actually has its own hyd system - not part of the 3 point. The pump is mounted at the front of the tractor. The hydraulics for the loader are completely separate from anything else.

(I can post a picture if that will help and if the site allows it!)

How do I check the pressure going to the cylinders and what is a normal pressure level?

Chuck

Check the hyd routing, valving and suction side of the pump. Strainers, filters, holes that suck air or blockage. It's always a good idea to eliminate the cheap causes first.

I would first check the cylinders, remove and check to make sure that they are working (extend retract) with the cylinders off then check to see if the bucket moves, then check pressure to cylinders. If it is really rusty then you will want to make sure that the cylinders are not rusted too and that the seals are not worn out.

Try hooking the hydraulic hoses up to another tractor. Assuming the controls are part of the loader. PS Check for redundant controls. You may need to cinch a lever in the on position.
