I am dealing more and more with air conditioner systems on my tractor and service truck due to having a hard time getting service people out to help. I need to gain some knowledge mainly on charging system and servicing. I need to find a good book source to read and learn. I need recomendations for good source material.

Thanks

Check out this site for the Mobile Air Conditioning Society, they have alot of good informaton. You can also do a web search and find alot of good reading material. About two years ago one of my customers needed the a/c system on one of his machines repaired, as well as wanting systems installed in two machines that didn't come with them. I only found one guy local that wanted to work on them and from what I gathered all he could do was troubleshoot a factory system and replace parts. So, seeing the need I started researching and learning and eventually went through MACS to get my certification card. The guages, etc to get started aren't that expensive unless you plan on doing repairs that require you to evacuate the system. If you plan to get in that deep then you'll need a recovery machine and their not cheap. As far as the certification test, honestly, it's open book and it's not all that hard, plus you always have the books to fall back on for a question because there's no way you'll ever remember everything anyway. So, do a little research and I'm sure you'll find the info you need...Good luck.

John Deere has a good FOS, Fundamentals Of Service manual on air conditioning for farm equipment. Their latest 2006-2007 Learning Resource Materials Catalog shows it for $28.95 plus some shipping I suppose. Latest 2005, 9th edition is 112 pages, Order number FOS5709NC Air Conditioning. JD Publication 1-800-522-7448. Got my start on AC stuff with JDs first edition of that manual when local dealer didn't have time to do AC on tractor and threw the manual at me with some tools and said have fun lol. So learned how and bought my own tools later. If you need some ag AC parts resources email me.

I didn't even bother with a book. I went to the auto parts store, bought a changeover kit for 134 for about $30,changed two tractors and my old farm truck. If they start blowing a little warm,I get another can and put it in. Had a tractor that would leak out all the old stuff in three days when the service man put it in,holds 134 for about two years.

I like the idea of somebody knowing what they are doing while working on expensive rotating and presurized equipment.

Dear Michael,
Most Vo-Tech schools offer night classes on air conditioning. these classes provide theory of operation along with hands on experience. You will lern how to diagnose problems using guages and how to use evacuation equipment etc.
