Loren, I noted your hassle with the CL 40. I just picked up a decent one....I think! I would appreciate any contact info for parts you found, any manuals, sites, etc that would help me get a good library on it, places to get parts or info. Also-do you have the thing around still-for parts?
ANYONE ELSE READING THIS -feel free to respond!! Every little bit would be appreciated! My email is pmaniam@aol.com

I have a CL40 and have had it for a number of years. My is supposed to be about 1980! The hydraulic system is seperate ad it is hydrostaic which is better than mechanical drive. Mine was apparently made by the Erickson corporation that was best known for fork lifts. I have not had many problems with it. From what I can tell it is a totally off the shelf assembled machine. I can't see any parts except the axles maybe that were made for the machine. are I replaced the control joints and Mcmaster has the exact exact items. It is a very well designed loader even by today's design. On mine you can see the cutting edge which makes final grading a easy job. It also has a 1500 pound capacity which a modest lifting capacity with all the counter weights which is good even today considering some new machines have problems with maximum weights. My machine had universal hydraulic oil in the hydraulics which is a close to motor oil as you will get. Manuals are available on this site. Ford industrial engines has all the engine parts. Have fun.  Re: Ford CL 40 Skidsteer Loader Info Lube Question in reply to pmanmike, 05-01-2007 14:14:29
Thanks everyone for your responses-more info is a beautiful thing. Im in your debt!

I also noted on this unit it shows M-2c48a motor oil as the lube for the hydro, but I read this is discontinued. I also read the M-2c134c is the replacement(and saw NH 134 too), Is this new replacement a motor oil or a tranny type fluid? I notice quite a confusion on this -anyone have a good answer?

I also wonder if I can top off the 48a with the 134 ?
Thanks ahead

The company that made them made them for White/Oliver too. You might check with Agco, but I don't think there were very many out there.

Lumber yard where I worked had one of those, was a tough little machine, had the V-4 with ford script on the valve covers. Place was not good on taking care of their equipment and trucks, one thing I hated about working there.

I'd imagine that one of those properly taken care of would probably provide good service, crude by todays standards for a skid steer, but nonetheless, I thought it was a good machine, after using if for snow removal and cleaning up the yard.

Yes, the one I picked up seems to be decent considering the age. It has the little 4cyl with the script-runs real nice too, no smoke, ticks and purrs away. Im more concerned on the drive hydraulics which Im not too good at. They work ok now but hey-ya never know.

I always thought it was a tough machine, this place did nothing to maintain anything, you either did it yourself or it did not get done, can't tell you how many repairs I did on the trucks I drove.

They ran this thing low on coolant, never changed the oil, grease, nothing and it ran a long time, I hate to see equipment abused, makes me want to hand them a shovel, then they'd appreciate that machine.

I'm unfmailiar with the drive train, these must have come out in the late 70's, we had a Ford dealership, late 60's mid 70's, never saw one of those until the lumber yard. Motor is a tough one.

Do use care getting in and out of that CL-40, don't recall a safety lock out for the levers, makes em a bit dangerous if you grab or bump into one while it's running, not hard to do either.

Yes, no lockout on the levers-found that out right away! I always shut down anyway. A touch of the key and away you go again.

They were built in Holmes county Ohio. I assume by the Amish? After the parts were no longer available from ford, you could buy from the Kinsey factory that built them. The 4058 sold under the Kinsey name, is the same as the CL40 Ford.

I was told the company is out of business, assets sold at local auction, and nobody continued the line.

A good welder, and a good hydraulic shop, can take care of most of the problems, except the engine. Look at the ford archives, as they refer to a Saab engine that might work.

May be somebody from Central Ohio knows the history. I'm curious.

Good Info! Thanks. Is there any bone yards that specialize in Kinsey or this Ford?
Amish??? IS that a joke or for real? I thought it had to be a wood skidder-LOL
