Last fall there was an extensive discussion on this forum regarding the merits of diesel additives such as Power Service. Opinions ranged from 'it's snake oil' to 'the stuff really works'.

Since I was about to leave on a 5000 mile tour of Texas in a 04 1-ton Dodge 4wd diesel pulling a trailer I decided to test Power Service. I was part of the 'snake oil' persuasion.

Using only the on-board computer, reducing variables as much as possible, being as objective as possible, repeating each test as often as practical, I got a 10%+ increase in mileage. I don't know if it cleaned my injectors, increased my cetane rating, lubricated my injector pump, treated contaminated fuel so it would burn, or added anything else to the equation.

There is a very real possibility that the results of this test are unique to my truck or that unusual circumstances beyond my control prejudiced this test. A 10%+ increase in mileage seems to be 'to good to be true'.

However, with $3.00 diesel fuel I think further test makes sense. Power Service adds about $.08 a gallon to the price of diesel.

I would like to see additional objective test made by the 'big kids' out there to see if additives do anything other than make the producers of the stuff rich.

I beleive it! I gain 1 mpg in my '96 6.5L when I run a good additive such as Lucas or Power Service. I just made two 200 mile round trips, one with dino oil and one on synthetic (Amsoil). Exact same roads and driving speeds and I gained exactly 1 mpg on the Amsoil.

Objective tests should be carried out. Never yet seen any. Only drivers reporting figures or something similar. The tests should be done on a pumping set running 24/7, or a generator under a constant load, so as to be reasonably reproducible. I wonder why nobody has seen fit to test in this manner - maybe "cos the "benefits " wouldn"t be proven and when the injectors are clean the same results are achievable (so it only really needs injector cleaning every 200 hours run or so)?
Just my cynical mind in gear.
Regards, RAB

I believe with the new ultra low sulfur diesel we will all have to use some kind of fuel additive. Tom

Could just be that you were all freeway driving at a steady speed too.

That's correct Walt. All test were at highway speeds both with and without the additive. As much as possible over the same roads to and from the same destinations.
