4020 sycro w/ loader??

Does anyone know about 4020 hydraulics on a 1965 synromesh. I've heard a sycro and power shift run loaders much differently. That putting a loader on a sycro mesh has so little standby pressure that when loading round bales, you loose pressure when pushing in the clutch. Is this true? How limiting is this handicap? Sure would appreciate input.

I have never had any problems.I have a 67 with a 148 loader and a syncro trans. I don't like loaders on power shift because going from forward to reverse is such a pain.

When the 4020 synchro looses hydraulics soon after the clutch pedal is pushed, there is a check valve deep in the transmission that is worn out. There was a service information about that from Deere. I have the information from that SI on my web page and I did it to my '68 4020 with MF 236 loader several years ago. I have let the tractor sit all winter, push in the clutch, start it, still holding in the clutch and lift the loader 4 or 5'. it works and isn't expensive to do.

Don't forget to mention a "high pressure leak to sump", or any function leak that returns high-pressure oil to the transmission housing (rather than to the oil cooler/front pump charge circuit) will hasten the hydraulics "running out of oil".

In other words, if the check valve Gerald worries about is OK AND the rest of the system is ALSO "up to par", you will get longer loader function with the clutch disengaged than if any of the above mentioned problems exist.

That leak possibility is the gist of the service bulletins I have about side console 4020. Also probably applies to the early 4020 though maybe not as much.

I don't have enough on the later 4020 to know about failing check valves, but my service info doesn't apply and I know in the I&T manual that charge pump tests for the early 4020 are not to be done to the later tractor.

Yes you will loose flow on a syncro range when you push in the clutch because the tranny pump quits turning. A power shift does not disconnect the clutch as the pedal is hooked to an inching valve. Time you can run a loader with the clutch pushed in will vary from tractor to tractor. Ours does pretty good and if you do run out of oil just flip it into neutral and let the clutch out.

There are at least a couple gallons of oil in the oil cooler and reservoir up front that should hold hydraulics working until they run out, if the check valve isn't leaking it back to the transmission or some high pressure leak isn't wasting the oil back to the sump or around a valve.

Fixing the check valve has fixed a large number of tractors with the fault.

Never experienced any difficulties of any fashion with dads 4020 and 148 loader. It would just plain pick up those bales and put them anywhere you wanted.

I know that the 4010 sycro had troubles with enough flow with the clutch in.

Going up with the loader was fine it just went slow. But when going down it would shake and jerk from lack on oil.
