I need to take myself into the eye doctor and get an exam and new prescription. Been thinking about getting contacts because I either break or lose glasses. Do contacts work ok in dusty conditions? I do alot of dirty work like carpentry, drywall, mowing lots and lots of grass, the occasional hay baling, farming twice a year, and general dusty stuff. I'm nearsighted, but not real bad. I can do just fine without any help. Are contacts the way to go or will they get all full of crap and I'll have to stop and clean em every 5 minutes? Oh, and I always wear safety glasses when doing the woodworking and weed trimming and stuff like that. Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the replies folks. I think I'll give them a try and see what happens. The general concensus is that I'll be ok. Now I just have to remember to call the doc.

When I was a teenager, I tried contacts for awhile. Back in the 60's, I think that only hard lenses were available. I found that the combination of contacts and any amount of dust was a recipe for disaster! The dust would get under the contact and irritate the eyes. I actually had tears run down my face when I tried to do field work or ride a dirt bike.

The other problem I had was that my glasses wouldn't work right for a long time after I had had contacts in. It was like I needed a different prescription, although the glasses worked just fine after a couple of hours wearing them.

Then I fell asleep with the contacts in. When I awoke, I was in terrible pain and couldn't see out of one eye. The eye doctor told me that the injury was the worst blister he had ever seen caused by a contact lens. He put medication in the eye to deaden it and I had to wear a patch over that eye for several days. After that I tried putting the contacts in again, but they felt awful, so I never did it again.

I went back to glasses again full time. To me, glasses are much more practical than contacts, and also much cheaper. A number of times wearing glasses has protected my eyes from objects that would have really hurt if they had hit the eye instead of just bouncing off the glasses. And dust is much less of a problem for glasses, where it might prevent me from doing what I want to if I was wearing contacts.

The modern soft contacts might work better than the hard lenses I had experience with, but I have had absolutely no desire to try them. Glasses just work too good for me.

I wore soft contacts for 30 years. I too was near sighted so I wore just one for distance. I think they call that mono vision.

When in dusty conditions the eye WITHOUT the contact would collect dust, not the one with the contact. It seems that with a properly fit contact no dust can get under it.

The trick is to KEEP THEM CLEAN and replace them at the first sign of a defect. If they are properly fit and you get used to them you can not tell they are in your eyes.

With due respect to the other posters, I have seen allergy and other rejection conditions to contacts. They just do not work with some people. I loved them.

I AM NOT AN EXPERT. I just related my experiences with them.

I'm pushing 40 and have had contact since 4th grade. Granted I went about a 4 year stretch where I didn't wear them because the dirty/dusty conditions I was working in just didn't agree with the contacts available at the time. They weren't disposable, were almost impossible to get clean, and after getting conjunctivitus once they had to go. When I got them again I started back with the Acuvue disposables and I loved them. When I went to the eye doc last year they had changed the material some and are now producing Acuvue 2 lenses which are even more comfortable then the origionals. I've worn mine sport diving over 100 feet down, as well as in a fab shop where I was welding galvaneel all day so there were always welding fumes, grinding, welding flash, etc etc. The it was on to working plant maintance in a hot dip galvanizing plant around all the acids they use, in a plastics extrusion plant which was mainly high heat and light dust, and at a concrete plant where there was always alot of dust. I'm finally settled down and have been for the last 9 years as a heavy equipment mechanic where I'm all the time under or down in a machine and if there are other machines moving around usually plenty of dust, especially when I'm working on a customers rock drills. Like the others have said contacts can cause problems and they aren't for everyone. You do have to maintain them just like anything else and occasionally you'll still need your glasses to let your eyes rest. It sounds like alot but it beats glasses all the time. Think about it, the worst you can do is give them a try and find they don't work out for you. Most docs will give you a sample pair to try if you get the exam so I say go for it, you've got nothing to lose but your glasses. Good luck.

They work well however get a good pair of safety glasses. After wearing eyeglasses then going to contacts. You will have to re-learn looking away from hazards

Just depends on you I have worn contacts for 3-4 years now and do everything in them with or with out a cab and has never really caused any problem for me I have even ran equipment on construction sites in the dirt and dust and get along just fine. The biggest problem I have is working under equipment I have a stigmatism (sp?) so the contacts are weighted and turn when I look at things from sideways which really messes with your head.

Wore glasses since the second grade, I'm 44. I couldn't use contacts in dust. However many times I'm glad I had my glasses on. Saved my eyes many times over.

Both places I've worked in the past 27 years banned use of contacts on the job. Safety concerns with chemical fumes and dust. And in food prep the risk of losing them into the feeds. Daughter wears them most of the time. Seems like her eyes are always irritated. Wife wore them for awhile but she would develop conjunctivitis. Son and I both never messed with them, biggest problem we've had is dirty lens and occasionally bent frames.

I've baled a lot of hay in contacts, never saw much difference between them and glasses. When ever I do woodworking or am under the car changing oil, I always wear safety glasses because if dirt falls in your eyes, then you don't want to be handling contacts with dirty or greasy fingers. You should be wearing safety glasses in those situations anyway.

Now that you mention it, could I borrow $3,000? haha Yeah that laser surgery sounds like a cool deal, but it's a bit out of my price range. Good idea though.

I've had Laser sugery. My wife and son have also had it done. Its the best money we ever spent. Now a days you can get it done fairly reasonable. Check around, less than a thousand in our area. Its been almost 10 years since we had ours done.

I wear glasses and do all of what you said etc. Would never wera the contacts. Wife had them an she would help bale and she awlays had to take them out and wear her glasses because of the dust. Son in law wore them to works at sawmill and I notice he now has glasses to much irritation otherwise. But your luck might be different

Unlike the other replys, I wear them daily with no problems. Been that way for a long time. Even baling hay, or working in the field with no cab, I still have no problems. Just use the disposible soft lenses, I change my about once a month. I would NEVER go back to glasses!!!

My experience w/contacts was not a pleasure. Been wearing glasses for more years than I want to say. A couple of years ago, went and got contacts. I work in dust and pollen off of haybaling, then do some woodworking on the side. The dust on the contacts was too much, had to go back to glasses. Contacts might work for you, but they sure did not work for me.
Good Luck....

You will need to wear the full goggles that will seal your eyes from the elements. Safety glasses wont cut it. My buddy has worn contacts for many years and always makes sure he has goggles whenever he will be around conditions that may irritate his eyes.
Check with your eye DR. they will have recomendations that will fit your needs.

i tried them. working outside all the time caused calcium buildup on the surface of my eyes. couldnt wear em, always felt like i had dirt in my eyes. other problem i had is i wore glasses since kindergarten and could not get used to not wearing them, so i'd wear either sunglasses or saftey glasses. ask the eyedoctor to fit you with a pair and see if you like em.
