OWE..... Digging post holes by hand in sticky sticky clay. Good thing I am not getting paid by the hr. I would have been fired.

People keep honking at me wile sitting in the lawn chair next to the 1/2 dug post hole.
:-)

Get more tired getting the clods off the digger than getting it on.

An older gent in my neighborhood did you one better while putting in his fence by hand along the county road- he also had his wife out there (she was reading a book), and two lawn chairs with umbrellas, cooler for cold drinks, radio, etc. I stopped and talked with him- he said he had been reluctant to show his age by having a shaded chair at first, but now was glad he did- said he met more nice people that way! Took "them" several days, but got the job done, and a very nice job at that. All that being said, I still wish I was 20 again. . .

I have phd I bought at TSC. Works great, I have done several hundred holes with it. I got the 12in augur for it, means I don't have to be as accurate in spotting it, even if it isn't perfectly straight, the hole is big enough to just drop a 6 in post in, and wiggle it around until you get it squared up. And I can spot it from the tractor seat, means I stay away from the augur. If that puppy ever catches you, you are in trouble.

Or you could just go build the pyramids, build another great wall of china, or be a miner for a living.

I can relate to that. The summer i put the fence up around the back yard we were in a drought , once ya got thru the top soil that is where ya sorta stopped . Even the spud bar would just bounce . it was dig one hole take a break for a hour have a couple barley pops dig next . Ended up usen water in the holes to soften them up . That same year my buddy and i started worken on fence at the farm the post hole auger would not go in no matter what we tryed . Then i found out one of my other friends had a auger that went on the skidsteer and now we had DOWN FORCE , Now that is what ya need to make holes in hard rock infested ground. Just wished that i would have knowen that my friend had that when i was putting in the yard fence instead of thee weekend of busten my donkey it could have been done in and hour. If ya got a skidsteer with the third valve go rent one nomatter what the cost it is alot less then a heartatach.

I have my grandfather's old post hole digger I dug a lot of holes with that when young and used it here on the farm before my heart attack, now I use my power post hole digger on the back of the tractor.
Grampa's digger is getting rusty and I don't care one bit about that.

No I do not think serving in Vietnam was stupid.
Hard duty.... yes very hard. When you concider all the tactical and stratigic mistakes made. I can see how some one who served would feel unapriciated.

Although we did not keep the commies from getting Vietman. If you open up and look at the real big picture. I.E. stopping the commies from just taking over more of the world. I dont recal them succeding any where else after. as a matter of fact I dont think they even tried it again.

In my world view Korea and Vietman where the same fight just in different places.

Oh oh now we are really off topic.

The lawn chair is a good thing! I cannot imagine dealing with hard or difficult soils, by hand anymore, good work out but always slow, sounds like it was wet with the clods sticking.

I've got a fence job coming up, and you can bet either a mini excavator or an auger will be included in the price, no other way, backyard of an old building, always junk in the ground, rocks, bricks, and demo debris. This work don't get any easier when you get older, that is for sure.

Pretty soon the 2 17? yr olds had all the feed on the dock and started throwing bags too. Well.. after another 5 minutes, I just had to stop and catch my breath and wip the sweat off my face... now ay I could.. or was gonna try keepin up with the younguns.. i aint tryin to proove anything..

I had 9 holes dug for building my deck 2 years ago. I paid him $150 for all 9, he had a skid steer with a 8" auger, took him 15 minutes and I had all the holes marked. (hard clay too) it would have sucked big time to do it by hand.

Few years back when I was recovering from heart trouble, we were building a pasture for wife"s sheep herd. Was making awful slow progress at holes by hand. Wife authorized purchase of cheap one from TSC. I have been very happy with it, it has done very well, Many holes, in most soil conditions, and lots of rocks. I just take it easy. Tractor has down pressure, and I have never had to use it. Auger pulls itself right in. One of my more satisfactory purchases!

I got in a real bind once. I had the post hole digger on a Farmall 300. It screwed itself right into the soft ground, and I had one heck of a time freeing it up. From then on, I made sure the down pressure I used was on the light side.
