Well now that you have learned how to trace down an electrical problem just remember that fuel problems are the same thing. Start at the source (Fuel tank) and work towards the Carb to see if there is any blockage in the system. if that is OK then pull carb and throughly clean it Blow out all orifices.

thanks a bunch guys u all helped me a ton!! it did turn out to be the insulator going through the dist. got it fixed up and runs but now i think i mite hafta give the carb a good cleanin it wont run under load without the choke half way out!! haha. if its not one thing its another!!

The insulators on the stud that "feeds through" the distributor housing commonly get damaged and short out on those distributors.

With the points open, you should be seeing battery voltage on BOTH primary coil terminals.

If not, the insulators I mentioned are shorting out, the condensor is shorted, or the points are somehow defective.

The insulators are still available from CNH.

Disconnect the wire from the coil to distributor and check voltage if it still low replace the coil if it goes up then check the voltage as it goes though the points to the ground in the distributor. It should be along that line someplace. Its like looking for a kink in a hose just follow the flow to see where it stops.

ok thanks walt i have full volts with the wire off the coil to the dist. but now what would u recomend i do? i put heavy plastic between the bolt head and the dist and it didnt seem to do anything still low voltage.

Coil is not your problem so move on to next thing that would the wire going to coil and then the points where it hooks up. Also disconnect the condenser it could be shorted out.

Bob Walts giveing me a hard time because the other day I told a guy that he needed to check his spark on an 8N because it would only run when choked, and Walt told me chokeing it had nothing to do with spark, which I know you know about but Walt just keeps on keeping it up and will not believe me on this one

You should have 6 volts at the points when they are open and nothing when they are closed. Sounds to me like a pinched wire or a bad condenser.

if i test it from the pos side of the battery i have 1-2 v if i test it from the neg side of the battery i have 6 v at the points but not the pos side of the coil then.

Lets not get confused measuring two different ways.

To minimize confusion, its better to measure from ground, e.g. the tractor frame.

The supply side of the coil gets 6 volts probably -6 volts with the positive battery post grounded. That coil terminal should be the - terminal. The + terminal then goes to the insulated contact of the points. The other point contact is grounded.

The insulated point contact and coil + terminal have to change from 0 volts to the 6 volt supply voltage for ignition to work. If the voltage is only 1-2 volts with the points open it won't run. There are four parts that affect that points open voltage. You have already eliminated the coil by unhooking the wire and finding 6 volts on the coil to distributor wire. That points at the wire, the condensor or the points. Connect them one at a time watching for the low voltage condition.

With that low voltage while the points are open fixed, you have a chance of it running. Unhook the wire that goes from the high voltage terminal on the coil to the center tower of the distributor from the distributor. Hold that wire about 3/8" from ground and crank the engine or close and open the points. You should get sparks if the coil is good. Blue sparks. If not and the low voltage checks out, then you need a coil.
