Hey guys, I've got a friend looking for a short block (or long block) 454 to go in a boat. I told him about Targetmaster engines that Chevrolet used to sell, but nothing came up on the web. Does anyone know if Chevy still sells these engines, or maybe they changed the trade name or something?

Thanks

Goodwrench is the name for current line of GM replacement engines. There are stock engines available but also mild, medium and high performance versions of each engine including 502 cu. in. big blocks specifically for marine use. They are specifically tailored for passenger car, trucks, street rods, circle track and marine. All dlrs have specs and prices. Also, all new GM vehicles come with coolant sealant in cooling system due to different expansion/contraction rates of cast iron, sheet metal, aluminum, plastic, rubber etc. used in current engine configurations. It has nothing to due with quality problems. Its is to prevent very minor seepage over time.

Exercise caution with a car engine...the torque curves are different...he'll need to change out the cam and marinize the engine. Car engines are made to run up to cruising speed and then settle in at a low rpm and boat engines are made to run all day long at 4500 rpm....have him look into the differences. Just a short block and different cam may work for him but certainly not the intake manifolds and the carb definately has to marine type. If he doesn't marinize it, expect a big booom.

A friend of mine who works at a GM dealership says the NEW crate engines come with 4 stop leak tabs and instructions to use them!
That kinda worries me for some reason....

Targetmaster is what Goodwrench called their remanufactured engines at one time, don't know if they still do, I don't think so.

I think you are thinking of "Taskmaster engines". That was the name for Chevrolets heavy duty truck engines in th 50's and 60's.

When I was a wholesale rep for a large Chevy dealer parts department in the 1980's the GM crate engine program definitely sold Targetmaster engines...and the Goodwrench engines were the remans. Now I believe they use the Goodwrench name for all of their crate engines...but about 10-15 years ago, they started using the AC/Delco name on their remans. Not sure if they still have that program or not, because I've been out of GM parts for 13 almost years.

But "Taskmaster" and "Thriftmaster" definitely were names for Chevy truck engines in the 1950's as well.

Bussman, there was also a "trademaster". That one might have been the lighter duty engine used in panel deliveries, etc.

Sounds like an engine builder that used chevys. Why don't call Gale Banks, you know if your going 454 you could do a diesel.

I have had real good luck with the new Chevy engines. A year ago I paid $1250 for a complete new 350. This includes new valve covers, oil pan, and front cover. How could you possibly beat it?

Be very careful with those engines Kevin. I have had two seperate personal occasions on 350 chevys with those engines and both of them were shipped out faulty. One had a missing main bearing and another a few years later had the front oil gallery plugs never installed under the timing cover. I am not kidding. If I were you I would consider dissassembling it and checking it over before it ever saw an engine compartment. Nothing like doing a project and having the oil pressure missing in action! We had the same problem with a SVO Ford crate engine. Oil gallery plugs were never put in the long block. Dad was putting it in his mustang. Had him fit to be tied!

That may be but Re:O.T Chevy Targetmaster Engines in reply to davpal, 04-24-2007 08:43:19
That may be, but I bought one in the crate, complete 350 truck industrial years ago, now has over 40,000 miles of heavy truck use. This engine still runs like a new engine. It has had only one tune up since install.
I guess some guys always get all the lemons ;((

Thanks Allan and thanks to the others with intelligent answers. I've been out of touch with the gas engine world--mostly fool with diesels these days.

We already found a local dealer for the fellow--he's in VA. His boat has a Mercruiser engine with a crack in the block. He'll be switching over all the marine parts and probably resuse the heads and cam too.
