I just purchased a rebuilt generator for my TO30. I saw somewhere on this forum an article stating that you had to excite the generator to make it start charging? Rub its belly? No serious, what do I need to do? I believe I heard that one of the two wires leaving the generator to the regulator was used to excite the generator. Any help would be great. The new part is in place but not charging according to the amp meter.

Some of the generator have an adjustment that adjusts the charging rate by rotating the whole brush package. On some its a screw on the side and some just require moving the brush holder.

Polerizing Generator: Disconnect both wires on the generator ,not required but may save the regulator if you screw up, ground the "F" terminal on the generator and touch a hot wire from the battery to the "A" terminal on the generator with the engine shut off if your fan belt is loose the generator will spin like a motor a few seconds is enough. Remember that the TO30 is positve grounded. You will be running the wire from the "_" terminal on the battery. If you hook it up and it still doesn't charge ground the "F" terminal and it should go to full charge do this with it running.

Thanks Ernie,
That is the article in the forum I was referring to. I am not to familiar with the ins and outs of this and that sounded Greek. I have a wiring diagram that shows one of the poles on the generator as A which goes to the slot marked G on the regulator and the other pole marked F which goes to the slot marked F on the regulator. Any help from this point forward would be great. I assume polarizing is temporary exersize accomplished with a jumper wire from one spot (?) to another spot (?)while doing something(?)ie. turning engine over, running engine? I have also heard that if done wrong I will be purchasing more parts. Thanks again, any more help would be greatly appreciated.

3 Wire generator? Wow, it has been so long since I had to figure one out.

You take a short piece of wire and while it is running, just touch it real briefly to make a spark.

It was done wrong on our TO 30 and the cut out points stuck, so when it was shut off, the battery drained back through the generator.

So you got an ammeter, and by the sounds it works. Also from your description it is hooked up right, but would feel better if someone would confirm.

This operation is called polarizing a generator. For delco remey, the forum search indicated a jumper from Bat terminal to Armature terminal on voltage regulator.

Not all are the same, I seem to remember Ford is different, but you should have a Delco Remey unit.
