Does anyone know if there is a trick to remove the dipstick from transmission of a Yanmar 155d? I have tried turning and pulling but to no avail. Any suggestions on get this free? If I pull really hard or use channel locks can I damage anything? Thanks

If the dipstick is like my YM 1700 then it was a stick mounted in a cast iron or cast aluminum cap that was threaded into the transmission. I'd put a tool on it and see if it would budge.

Is a YM 1700 a grey market tractor or a "liscenced" import tractor?

As far as i know. ALL of the 4 digit yanmars were grey, and virtually all of the 3 digit models are domestic. With the exception of the 177 ( an old ver of the 1700 )

Thanks.

How hard is it for you to get parts?

I passed on a 1700 a while back that seemed to good to be true for the price for the amount of tractor you were getting.

Generally not bad.. depends on the part.

Over at the TBN sub. there is a yanmar forum.. lots of dealers hang out there...

don't know what that model uses , but some of the older JD's made by Yanmar the dipstick screwed in and was plastic and had small ears on it. Sometimes you need pliers for extra force cause fingers aren't enough. And remember Lefty loosy - Righty tighty.

Aloha, I don"t know anything about the Yanmar dipstick, but if you can find a similar trans., I would take a look at it and see how it is built. That way, you can see if any damage will occur or it will give you a clue on how to do it. Most of the dip sticks that I saw, can be removed by just pulling it out.

Everyone knows that when John Deere paints a Yanmar green it automatically becomes and "American" tractor.

You can paint it any color you want, and give it any name you want, but a Yanmar is still a Yanmar, and it is still imported.

Agreed.

Slapping John Deere, New Holland or whatever on the side doesn't change the fact that its a Japanese tractor.

The ones they built for Deere were a little different than the Red or off Green ones they imported.

And they sure do know how to build a trouble free unit ! Can't blame them as WE let them trample US in the market place.

All you have to do is look at a Deere compared to a Yanmar. The first thing I saw was the Deere will have VERY obvious heavier built steering rods. Some of the other stuff looks heavier too. I don't think one model was exactly built off another or copied. They seem totally redesigned. But I guess we would have to tear them both apart too see for sure if anything actually interchanged.

You have allready convinced yourself Japan makes junk and Green is worse. I don't know why I'm even wasting my time trying to open your eyes to the fact that Japan makes REALLY GOOD products that last. Big corporate USA and it's stock holders were too busy padding their pockets to care to make good products so someone else did.

Actually I agree that Japan makes "good" equipment.

My point was aimed at those that are convinced if it ain't made in the US it is junk. They seem blind to the fact that a majority of the compact and subcompact tractors sold in the US under traditional "American" names are actually built in India, Japan and Korea. For some reason the green paint (or blue or red) fools them even though its cleanly stamped on the serial pad "Made in Japan". John Deere has made a mint playing on that ignorance with most of their investment being limited to stamping logos and spraying green paint.

John Deere,Kubota,New Holland (Ford)all made a "Mint" buy having superior Dealers and Parts networks and top of the class products. These 3 offer the best of the best and are very competitive and priced very closely.

The ones makeing a "mint" from ignorance are all the odd ball brands that came along after the big 3 forged the way and they aren't going to be around to offer parts and service.
