OT: Florida Vacation question

I hope/plan to take the kids on a road trip from West Texas to Florida this summer.

I really want them to see some "agriculture" from other parts of the country. I was hoping to find some nice orange or lime orchard and/or sugar cane or berry farm that gave tours or at least "pick your own" so the kids could see more than the corn/wheat we have out here.

Does anyone have any recommendations? We'll probably be heading down to I-10 in Louisiana and across going east and hope to go as far south as the Keys south of Miami.

Thanks for any advice,
(and sorry for the OT)
Howard

PS - I also read on the Internet someone cussing "no-see-ums" down on the coast calling them the worst biting insect in the world. I've never heard of them. Are they really that serious? Or at least seasonal? Or localized? Or had we better be worried when we get to the beach??

Born and raised on a lake in south central FL. Left after college.

After Disney you want to take US 27 all the way south. You'll see all the orange groves (remember, there are no orchards in FL)you can imagine. You can take back roads through the groves without permission. Forget picking, fruit ripens in winter.

Around Lake Placid you can visit caladium farms and avocado groves. There are also some huge (think miles) green houses that grow for the likes of Lowes, Home Depot, WalMart, etc. These are very impressive with a lot of heavy mechanization and organization. Also fairly recent.

South of Lake Okeechobee you'll see all the sugar cane you ever imagined.

I'd avoid Miami, unless you can speak Spanish.

Keys are a different world. Bring bathing suits and be ready to explain why the boys are holding each others hands.

You can also borrow AAA membership card and use for info if it doesn't bother you to do that. I don't think AAA cares.

Sure appreciate the comments and info!

I'm looking forward to seeing the country down there and the ocean as much as the kids are Disney World!

I don't care if part of it is swampland - out here farmers will pay $6000 per month or more for an eight inch pipe of water to irrigate with - so any water at all is interesting to me! ha...

Ah, yes...but it's only swamp land during the rainy season..which starts now. If the truth be known, Florida is running out of fresh water. The aquifers are receding and the population is growing and water restrictions are all over the place.

Bo has some good points. I also do not know of any agriculture "pick your own" places. If you do get close to Ft Myers on I75 I would stop to see the Thomas Edison/Henry Ford museums. The no-seeums generally aren't any worse than other mosquitoes etc insects. Love bugs season should be over soon, thank goodness. Silver Springs is a nice plesant way to see nature in glass bottom boats, in Ocala. Course they have all kinds of tourist traps, but for my money I stay far far away from these. Key West is a LONG drive and if you don't stop and enjoy the water it is hardly worth it. It is the Gay hang out of the East. Hope that isn't politically incorrect. But if you go there DO NOT miss the dock at sunset. The local carnival type people come out for free shows asking for donations, and some are pretty good.

Edison Museum is excellent..but not for kids. Still worth the seeing...the Banyon tree is worth it. More...if you get to Everglade City...south of Naples...take the tour boat...well worth the couple of hours and bucks...it'll take you through the mangroves out to the gulf and back. the Capt will chat you through the sights of ospreys, egrets and maybe dolphins. One thing he'll mention is that you shouldn't worry about sinking...no water depth to speak of...the boat will just settle the 5' to the bottom and that's it.

The whole of the west coast of Florida has lots of water .....but it's all spread real thin.

If you drive across using Alligator Alley ...if you see a sign for a hummock...park and take the walk...will be kinda neat. Most places will have board walks as you can't really walk in the swamps.

I noticed someone told you to ask AAA for the information. I think the question you ask could never be answered by AAA. The people on this forum could come closer to knowing where those places are. I know where they are up here in NC where I live. I'm sorry I don't know about your specific route, though. Good luck.

There is a guy who regularly poses here, ShepFL, who owns a U-Pick operation in Florida. Try pinging him.

Good Luck!

I can't help with Florida, but I can help with Georgia. You could stop at some pick your own peach orchards which should still be in season, although I'm in Central-North Georgia as opposed to southern Georgia.

Check out the Georgia Market Bulletin which has a listing of pick your own places.

Howard,

I believe the citrus picking wraps up in May, but you may find something down I-75. There are many "tourist trap" fruit stands--some are pretty good and others aren't worth stopping for. Try the link below for u-pick info. In Louisiana, I used to see sugar cane growing in the southern parishes--anywhere the soil is "mucky". Towns such as Raceland, Lockport and I believe around Houma had much sugar cane. Hurricanes Katrina & Rita wiped out much of the crop though and they may still be in a rebuilding effort.

Looking at your plan to get all the way down to the Keys, you must have several weeks off of work. Driving across Florida and then driving down Florida--that'll take a day or two with minimal stops. If I were making that trip, I would look at the crawfish farms and the shrimping industry in Louisiana. Ponchatoula is known as the strawberry capital of the world and we used to pick there too but the season's already passed. This area is north of New Orleans off of I-12. I n the FL panhandle, we have peanut and cotton production. I found this website that has some good info-a virtual field trip between Texas & Florida: http://www.geog.nau.edu/courses/alew/ggr346/ft/south/index-coast.html

The photos are somewhat dated but still worth a read.

BTW, in Mississippi, we called the no-see-ums "gnats" and they would always show up in the spring before it got hot. On the beaches its usually too windy for them to bother you, but when they bite, you'll know it. We haven't seen them in the FL panhandle although we have seen what the locals here call gnats--but they look more like small fruit flies--they buzz around you but don't bite. Hope this helps a little.

In addition...if you stop at a farm stand....do buy a "Florida Sweet" onion...buy a couple...it is so good, you can eat it like an apple.

Oh..cane fields..all just south of Lake Okeechobee....mile after mile the main highway...forgot which...just south of the lake will take you through cane country..further south and there isn't anything but cane and then the glades. Be careful in Belle Glade...cane town but generally not a place you'd wish to linger.

I don't know of tours in orange groves but they're all over the place..that is, you can see them from the road. There's really not much to tour in a orange grove....just a buch of trees. As for your pick your own...must be a place or two but I don't know of any.

If you're deep in southwest Florida...this is where the huge groves are and the orange semis keep rolling to the huge orange processing factories...but...the towns are far and few inbetween. I suppos you could stay at the local hotel/motel and just drive around. Immokolee is pretty deep in the everglade orange area and is close to ...day trip....to Fr. Meyers..but...there is nothing there but oranges...not many roads and no towns to speak of. South Florida is all coastal. If you're closer to Orlando...then you might get more "tourist" stuff.

Bring sunblock...seriously...watch for sunburns...keep most of the body covered. No seeums...you can see them...tiny gnats with razors for teeth...generally attack the ankles and legs...you won't see them until you feel the pain....then you'll look and you just barely make it out... no particular season...but more frequent in the summer..a good insect repellent will handle them. If you let them bite...they'll raise heck with the legs.

Fire ants...if you stray off the paved areas...watch out for mounds of sand...if you step on one and it's a fire ant mound...they'll swarm all over your legs and you'll wish you died. Not a problem if you keep moving or watch where you put your feet. Also...if you stray off the beaten path....just watch where you put your feet and hands...snakes. Also...keep in mind..everything in florida stings, bites, poisons and generall messes you up.. so..don't feel like you need to try to pull out a palmetto as you won't be able to and it's loaded with spikes...I've been into the swamps and back lands with frequency...use your head and you'll see a totally different world than what you are accustom to.

Also...keep in mind that the "real Florida" is pretty nasty....what you'll see in the developed areas is polished, watered, trimmed and imported.
