Hi...I want to use Lye gravy to clean the grease and paint off my 1956 massey baler (resoration project). I"ve used electrolysis with good results on the smaller parts, but I don"t have a tank big enough to dip the whole baler frame in (man that would be nice!)

I have 2 problems though, first off FIT"s website is currently down so I can"t find the recipe. Can anyone send it to me?
2nd, I can"t find any lye in the stores. Closest thing I"ve found is Drano Crystal Clog Remover, which is about 60% Sodium Hydroxide (lye). Will this work?

Any help appreciated...thanks!
Justin

Lowes carry lye. Used to be 10 cents a can when I was a kid.Its now about $4.95. Some good clean wood ashes is essentially the same as lye and a LOT cheaper.

try E-Z OFF oven cleaner. just spray on and wait and hose it off. works almost as good as lye and much safer and cheaper and easier to use.

Yep that stuff works great. Also found some grill cleaner that will eat any paint except epoxy paint off.

You can probably blame the meth heads for some of the problem finding it, they use it for cooking their drugs I think. Biodiesel guys use it to I think to neutralize the acids in their fuel?

As far as drano goes for using it as a lye source, it would depend on what that other 40% make up is. Post the rest of the components and I might be able to tell what they are/ would do if used.
