OT-Knocking noise in '99 F150

This is in my '99 F-150 with 50,500 miles & 4.6L engine. It is a standard transmission and when ever I shift from 2 through 5 right after the clutch is fully engaged and I am getting into the gas again, it knocks or chatters for a moment (almost sounds dieselish) and then doesn’t do it during regular driving. It will also do it if I am driving in 4th, 32-35MPH and 1200-1300 RPM, and I let off the gas, coast for second or two, and then press it again. Not flooring it, just maintaining speed. Getting started on a hill, getting started with a 1500lb trailer, slowly pulling over a curb, etc. it will also knock/chatter. Is this noise telling me that the engine is lugging? Should I change my driving habits? I usually go up to 1800-2000 RPM and then shift down to the 1200-1300 RPM range. Any suggestions as this is really starting to annoy me.

Thanks for any help

With the torque peak above 4000 rpm, the truck is geared wrong and you are shifting way too soon. The 4.6 L Triton (I drive a '98) loves to run 3 to 4K rpm and faster. You will probably get better gas mileage at higher engine speeds too. Its not a long stroke diesel, its a short stroke cross flow head gas engine. To pull trailers with mine, I swapped out the 3.08 gears for 4.10. Now I start unloaded and level in 2nd gear (can spin the tires if I open the trottle wide too soon), instead of first because the overall ratio in my 2nd gear is a little higher than it was in 1st gear originally.

I pull up to 4900 pounds of trailer load on occasion, though truck and wagon have weighed 11,000 pounds over the scale with some beans in the wagon.

The gas mileage at 50 to 60 mph speeds remains the same 16 mpg after the gear change as before (had about 28K miles when I did the gear change) but it drops off to 15 when I pull my 3000 pound Airstream at 50 or run lightly loaded on some interstates at 80 mph trying to keep up with traffic.

The rattle is lugging the engine, that's not all that good for it.

Mine has the 3.55 limited slip and if I am really nice around town (previous driving style) I could get about 15.8 MPG but I am typically closer to 15 because taking 400 yards to get to 30 MPH isn't very time efficient and other people get mad.

Thanks for everybody's help, I vill try more RPM's and look into that valve.

Thanks

The aluminum drive shaft rings like a bell when its rattled. Mine sings when the pinion teeth vibration matches its resonant frequency, long about 41 and 82 mph. That drive shaft would bee quieter if coated with rubber undercoat, but that's hard to apply and keep it balanced. I tried a bit of damping tape which helped until it came off. It would help the low speed rattle too.

It kinda sounds like your lugging it to me, all the SOHC V-8's make there power at higher rpm, at the 12-18oo range your useing your not getting into the range they like. try moving your shift points up, quite a bit to begin with and see what happensyou should be able to find a "quiet" range that also gives better power and (IMHO) longer life.

Been awhile since I owned a 150 but I remember that there was, in my opinion, an abundant amount of backlash in the drivetrain. I was told by the dealer that it was designed that way so that there was a place for the power to go. But if your noise is in the engine, then I don't know.

I'm certainly no expert, but it sure sounds to me like it is starving for a high enough octane gas. Use to get that often years ago when we'd get a lower quality gas.

I have one that does it also. I have tried high octane gas but that doesn't help. I bought mine when it had 20,000 mi. on it. It has always pinged like that during acceleration I have 162,000 on it now.

Mine will also idle fast when I come to a stop light. Have never been able to figure it out. Maybe someone on here will know.

When I disengage the clutch in a slow speed (Moving up in a line at a 4-way intersection, stop-go-stop-go) it will go to regular idle, go down to 450-500RPM, and then back up to regular idle after 1-2 seconds. What causes this? Sounds like it is about to die.

I guess I kinda pirated my own post, oops

Thanks again

I would start with the IAC valve.

Idle speed is contolled by the IAC (idle air control. They can start to stick after 100,000 miles. You will have to replace it.
