I have a couple of older diesels that we run here around the farm. I've read that the new re-formulated diesel has very poor lubricateing properties. What can I add to protect the fuel pump and injectors? Been using Marvel Mystery oil but after checking it out more thoroughly, it seems more of a detergent than a lube. Thanks

If you buy good quaility clean diesel from a honest dealer you do not need an additive in any diesel engine. Your just trowing good money away. The only time you may need an additive is if you have water in your fuel tank and have alge growing, then use an algeicide. Same thing in the winter if you run the proper blend you do not need an additive. Several years ago the local CIH dealer sold dad a bottle of power service in the winter. The dealer said use this and you don't need to blend fuel. I told dad he had wasted the money as it would not work. Well a few days later it was -10 and he was going to dump it in the loader tractor. The stuff would not even pour out of the bottle! So save yourself the problems you might create from dumping snake oil in the fuel system and put the two cycle oil in your chainsaw and buy quaility fuel and don't worry about it.

If you're concerned you can add two cycle oil,ATF, or any number of other clean oils. Your older diesels are quite tolerant .

It is the responsibility of your fuel supplier to ensure that his product meets the demands of your engines. Ultimately, if your engines fail because of fuel related issues, your fuel supplier has to stand the cost of making the repairs. Additives are just money down a rat hole.

Plowboy;

There will be dealers and stations in your area who sell off-road diesel. This fuel still has the sulpher in it and is not subject to paying road taxes. This is only for off road use and cannot be used in trucks used on the highway.

For my Dodge truck, I am using 2 cycle oil when i add fuel. Dollar stores usually have the small 2 cycle bottles for a buck each and I keep them in the seat of the truck and add one each time.... Gene

Along the same lines, 2% or so of bio-diesel (typically soybean oil but from any of the oil crops....) does it. Minnesota has 2% in all the diesel fuel.

Thanks boys for the information! I have started the 2 cycle oil but wasn't sure if it would help, now I feel a little better about it. Try to get a fuel company to pay for repair? I can just hear thier speil; " you got proof/" "how old is it?" "you didn't get that fuel from us!". From what I've read (not just internet stuff) bio-fuel has excellent lube properties but is very pricey in my area. Course once you figure in the price of additives, ya,it is pouring money down that old rat hole! Thanks agin'

 One cup of canola oil in reply to plowboy1, 04-15-2007 18:41:41
Add 1 cup of straight unused canola oil to everytank full of diesel. I have done this for a long time and never had any problems with injection pumps. On the net somewheer it is said to increase lubrication by over 60%. One cup of canola oil to every tank full of gas!

When you say tank full do you mean like a 35 gallon tractor or service tank?

What would be the purpose of adding canola oil to gas (unless you are talking 2-cycle mixed gas). Seems to me in a newer car you'll do more harm than good (premature contamination of O2 sensor etc etc).Just wondering
