Gentlemen and others,
The 414 if my memory serves me correctly was an updated B275? Were they good tractors? Asking this question because I value the judgement and experience on this website.
I seem to remember the B275 may have had a reputation for head gasket or cracked head problems? Any advice or info would be appreciated.
God Bless,
Rex

First of the series was the B-250 -late 1950s. The B-275 was an upgrade - and subsequently, the B-414 was an upgrade to the B-275. The B-275 has improved steering and slightly more power than the B-250 and its BD-144 engine is rated at 33 PTO horsepower. The BD-414 got a 154 engine with a max. around 36 PTO horsepower.
I've had them all on a dyno the power output has been consistent to posted specs. I've got two B-275s and also one B-414. They are all very rugged tractors but poor cold-weather starters. That is especially true with the early B-275 that use CAV in-line pumps with air-governors and a throttle-valve in the air-intake. Mahindra still uses the B-414 engine but upgraded it to direct-injection. They also still make and sell the basic tractor with some upgrades and more modern sheet-metal.

Hi Rex;
Yes the 414 was an uprated 275 fitted with larger 40HP engine (275 was rated at 37HP). New styled tinwork in IH red with cream wheels & grills.

The 414 featured "Vari-Touch" hydraulics which gave depth and position control via 2 levers (this system was available as option on later 275's).
The 414 was a very good tractor but never sold in the numbers that the 250 & 275 achieved. Rather outshadowed by the 3 cyl MF35 & Fordson Super Dexta which were the main selling tractors in that power bracket at that period.
Never heard of IH having cyl head problems, their downfall was the indirect injection engine which was hard to start in colder weather unless the battery & glowplugs were in tip-top condition.
Personally I think the 275 & 414 were better tractors than the MF & Fordson. They featured live PTO, idependent hydraulics - engine driven pump, diff lock, disc brakes, optional 540 & 720 PTO revs, and a higher weight to power ratio 100 Pounds to 1HP which gave better traction.
Cheers David

Thanks for that David, I value your experience on these models. I have always had a soft spot for the diesel Dextas as I grew up with them on a dairy farm, they bring back memories. Itis interesting that you prefer the IH of that era.
Yes, as soon as you mentioned glow plugs that reminded me that I have heard of the starting problems.
Thanks again, I appreciate the post.
God Bless,
Retcetera
