i worked for a dealer ship at that time 03.and problem is going to be in speedo cluster asm. thay had a problem at that time, trying to keep people from disk conecting speedo wire as to not add miles to truck.updated board came out to stop both problems.and on board coumputer did keep track of real miles. have your cluster sent in for repair, would be your best bet.

Is this a 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, HD? If you tell me what motor size, automatic or stick I should be able to get you some info. Better yet the last 8 numbers of the VIN. Chevy runs 3 different automatic setups in their trucks. Each one is gonna be pulling output speed, and/or vehicle speed from different sensors.

I'm a little out of the loop on the '03 models, but think the VSS should be either in the transmission tail-housing or the transfer case depending wheather the truck is a 4x4 or not.

If your transmission is shifting okay tho, it's not the speed sensor; trouble still lies in the dash head and this symptom just "screams" bad speedometer head.

Disclaimer: However, if your truck has a standard transmission, you could possibly be on the right track.

Hey Ya'all..... ...It is a 6.0 litre 4 door 1/2 ton. auto, and it shifts and drives fine. Chevy dealer said likely was in speedo head. Mistake we made was putting a used one in it. Dealer wanted $400 bucks and used one was free. What does that tell ya?? Got used one at junk yard and likely was an exchange for a good one. Thanks for your info.
