I have a barrell of old # 2 heating oil which has been sitting around for about 5 years. I generally use heating oil in my Case 580B backhoe diesel engine, because as I understand it they are the same thing. Is there any risk to my diesel engine if I use the old heating oil? Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks guys for the advice. I had it in my barn as a souce for my barn furnace but never got the furnace going. I guess I will use it after straining it and adding some additive.

Furnace oil and #2 diesel fuel are the exact same product. My fuel supplier frequently will fill both the house and farm tanks on the same ticket. As mentioned before, be sure it is clean and not contaminated.

Believe it or not, there are places that charge you to get rid of it. I had a relative die last year in New Jersey - in a suburb close to New York City. We sold the house - and a few days before closing - we got a complaint that the house had oil-heat and two full 275 gallon tanks down the basement. The new buyer insisted the potentially "toxic" oil be removed before the sale. Seems there's a lot of fear with older houses and basement tanks that might leak. If they test the basement soil and find evidence of oil - you're screwed. I live over 200 miles away - and had no good way to transfer the oil back home. Wound up PAYING 25 cents a gallon to have the oil removed! I also frequently see ads local to me - "free full tank of heating oil if you remove tank." So yeah, there's free oill around.

I've used 10 year old heating oil and it works just fine. Used it in my tractors, backhoe, dozer, and my 6.9 diesel Ford farm truck. In fact - the Ford is used to plow snow in the winter - and with some Power Service anti-gel added, it started just as well in cold weather with the old fuel - as it does with anything else. The main concern with any old diesel fuel - is if its collected any moisture - it might have a lot of diesel bacteria in it - and that plugs filters and fuel pick-up screens.

What Michael said about straining and using mixed with fresh diesel; and I would add 1 quart or APS diesel fuel additive. It raises the cetane, prevents gelling, removes moisture, lubes the pump, cleans the injectors, cleans the pump, and about 10 more things. Costs about $5 for a quart. Tom

I ran #2 heating all winter in my IH 544Deisel. It was donated from a buddies ma's old heating oil tank in the basement. Had to filter it because of algae, but the tractor ran just fine.

Yes, use it. Filtering it prior to putting it in the fuel tank would be advisable.

I would use it if I could strain it to make sure there is nothing in it that would plug filters and then I would add only a few gallons at a time, otherwise I don't see why not.
