Hi Gang;
This is the "standard combination" used in WW2. A Fordson N + Ransomes Motrac 2 furrow trailed plow. The Fordson is the wartime build, dark green colour, narrow mudguards, and on 24" rear wheels. Most though were supplied on steel wheels from new (rubber shortages); fitted with rubber wheels after the war was over.
All tractors used here were fueled by TVO, tractor vaporising oil (a type of kerosene) started on gasoline.
Cheers David

 what is a plowing match definition in reply to David in Wales, 04-12-2007 13:04:59
Hi Gang;
A plowing match is a competition to judge who is the best plowman, they have been held for over 100 years.
The field is marked out into individual equel sized plots, each entrant draws a numbered plot so that everyone gets a fair chance of the best or the worst part of the field.
The aim is to plow the straightest furrow, leave no grass/straw unburied, even width furrows, level top furrows, square ends on entry & exit, and even depth of furrow.
The event is timed, you must finish in that set time scale.
After you have done the initial opening furrow the plots are judged. Then after the first 4 furrows. Then whilst the plot is being ploughed. and finally when the plot is complete.
The Society of Ploughmen here have a set of rules and guides for awarding the points; the size of the plot, and how the plot is plowed. There are various classes for different plough types, ie mounted or trailed, grassland or stubble etc. There are now "universal" styles ie European & Worldwide styles.
The winner is the man who judged to have made the best job on that day. The best men over the year who enter official matches, are selected to plough for their Country in the World ploughing match held in different countries each year.
because each individual plot in any field varies with the soil type, amount of vegetation on top, stones hidden under the soil etc - its the SKILL of the ploughman to make adjustments to produce the "perfect" sample. Cheers David

Alright, here goes the question. I guess my hillbilly upbringing is a'fixin to show. What is a plowing match? What is it's purpose? Back we we were farming a plowing match consisted of who could get done first. Thanks

What is the red and white piece in front of the steering wheel for?? Some guys here in the states put flag holders on their tractors for parades. Is it something like that?

The Red and White striped things you see are poles used for marking out his plot during the ploughing match. After they're done most people seem to carry them somewhere on the tractor. Hope this helps, tractorsam
