WAY OT---Television set question....

I trust the folks here to give their honest opinions, so here goes. Thinking about bidding at a household sale on a big screen projection HDTV. This model is 52" I think, and is about three years old. I know it is a Toshiba, and it looks to be a rear projection job.

First, what is a 3-4 year old TV like that worth, ballpark.
Second....anyone have a similar set? What do you think of these?

Thanks for any input, sorry for the OT post.

My $.02 is that I do not like projection sets. You need to sit right in front of them. The projector pulls dust and soot out of the air and they need to be cleaned. I know several friends that have these stes. Another guy just spent $3,ooo plus at BJs club on a new SONY with the BlueRay player. If you can say that a TV has a living picture this is it! I know that my jaw was on the floor and drooled for almost an hour. Ya I can wish big but WOW does that thing look good! I know you would like a big set but I wouldn"t touch it. Sorry. If you have a BJ price club around go take a look. Instant spoiled rotten. Jeffcat

Don't know anything about their TVs, but we have a Toshiba surround sound system-including DVD and VCR players. Within the first year, the DVD player quit, when we got it back the audio was messed up, and prior to that one of the speakers quit, and they could not match it up off of the numbers on the back of my speaker. Long story short, I plan to avoid this brand whenever shopping for electronics again. Greg

As an old time radio tv repairman, with alleged memory loss, seems to me they are kind of hard to keep in adjustment. But the ones I remember were in recreation centers. Inquire about setup costs and pm.

I don"t know any thing about projection TVs, even less about submarine propellers, but I"ve had a 35" Toshiba regular tv for 7 years and it has preformed flawlessly.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I know it does work well-- and yes I agree it might not be worth much...but just want it for my "den" in the basement. Not going to be my primary set...just thought if I can get it cheap enough would be kind of nice to try it out.

So anybody have an idea what they would pay?

Brian,

I forgot to mention that I don't buy any Toshiba products anyway--since they transferred top secret submarine propeller machining technology to Russia several years ago. This act endangers our naval personnel operating our subs around the world.

Brian,

Unless you can get it for a few dollars, I wouldn't recommend you go after this item. For quite some time now, I researched the HDTV world as I wanted to get one for the family. Even in present day, I was amazed to learn that many TV's on the market are called HDTV but in fact they can only display an HD image. Basically they don't have a built-in HD tuner (ASTC type), but instead they only have an analog tuner (NTSC type). We almost purchased an "HDTV" but after reading page 4 of the TV's specs, I discovered that it only had analog capability-as far as receiving signals. Had we bought this one, we would also have to purchase an HD tuner in order to receive over-the-air HD signals. So--back to your question--I don't know the model # of the set you're looking at, but just by its 3-year age, I would guess that it may not have an internal HD tuner. Also, the rear projection units don't have the clarity of an LCD or Plasma HDTV. We ended up with a 42" Plasma and we really like it. In our area we receive about 25 HD channels and less than 10 analog channels. Also note that all analog signals will probably cease around Feb 2009.

Even if it's a good tv it's still not worth much.
